SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100351VXSR Radeon HD 7970 run three monitors? NOT at the same time

I am building a new HTPC that will also be my daily work computer.

The computer/HPTC will NOT be used for gaming.

  • Silverstone CW02 case
  • ASUS Rampage IV Extreme LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Extended ATX Intel Motherboard (if it fits)
  • Intel Core i7-3930K Sandy Bridge-E 3.2GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) LGA 2011 130W Six-Core Desktop Processor
  • G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 64GB (8 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) RAM


And for the video card, I am looking at;SAPPHIRE Vapor-X 100351VXSR Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card



Will this GPU run three monitors?
  • Two 27" desktop monitors for work
  • One through a Marantz SR7007 AVR to a JVC X30 projector
  • NOT all at the same time.


From the GPU I would like to;
  1. Use the HDMI out to the AVR - running the audio and video for the projector
  2. Use the two DVI outs with two 50ft HDMI to DVI Adapter Cable to the 27" monitors HDMI inputs


Or I may just use standard HDMI cables with DVI to HDMI converters

Will this setup work? I am not planning on running all three outputs at the same time, either the two desktop monitors or just the projector.
Or do I need a second video card?

Yeah it should work. You'll just have to change which monitor you want to use manually between one of the DVI outputs and the HDMI output. Although I have to point out, since your not going to game, why the 7970? If you went with a cheaper card you could almost build a second dedicated HTPC. Just a thought.

I have the same card, there are 4 different connectors (2DVI, 1 HDMI and 1 Display port).

You can hook up at least 4 without adapters (6 is the limit).

This card is somewhat overkill for ordinary BD playback, it is a highly capable GPU compute card. I use it for the MadVR GPU based renderer and SVP , a motion compensated frame rate converter based on OpenCL. Render times are almost 2X faster than the GTX680 I had before.

I see 85% load just with MadVR without SVP for 4K playback Jinc4 + AR on Chroma and Luma

Do you know if 2 cards in crossfire will share the load in OpenCL?
Load is shared across 2 cards in SLI with Nvidia.

SVP interpolating to 4K 24fps->60fps will require another 7970 by itself.
