Pain & Gain (2013) - Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson Dir Michael Bay

Walberg is really showing his range now with another good looking comedy follow up to Ted. This is going to have some good laughs I can tell.

Based on a true story, Pain & Gain follows a group of bodybuilders who engaged in a campaign of kidnapping, extortion and murder in Florida. First told in an article from the Miami New Times, the film stars Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Anthony Mackie, Ed Harris, Rob Corddry, Tony Shalhoub, Bar Paly, Rebel Wilson, Ken Jeong and Yolanthe Cabau.

Who would have thought Marky Mark would rise to this level in Hollywood?

I really enjoy his characters and he seems to have a talent for picking just the right roles.
And I think he does a very good job of acting.

FWIW, just saw him in Ted and he was great.

This looks good, will definitely watch this

I'm very interested in this one. I can admit I like Mark in many of his roles.

Very good vibrations: Mark Wahlberg would reunite with the Funky Bunch for Boston fundraiser

Is sweat comin’ out your pores yet?

Here’s some news that’s good like Sunkist: Important Actor Mark Wahlberg — a.k.a. Marky Mark, shirtless Bush I-era heartthrob — has indicated to TMZ that he’d be willing to reunite with his ’90s hip-hop group The Funky Bunch — a.k.a. Scottie Gee, DJ-T, Ashey Ace, and, most importantly, Hector the Booty Inspector — for a fundraiser benefiting the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.

Yeah but he hasn't seen the movie, so he made his declarations based on what...the trailer?.... rolleyes.gif

I will buy a ticket and I will see the movie - it's intented to be an action comedy based on, inspired by, a true story, not a documentary.

Mark Walberg is the best-built 3’8” guy I’ve ever seen. Camera angles, boxes, trenches, etc, etc, – priceless. wink.gifbiggrin.gif

Yeah, but if this movie is supposed to be a "comedy," I am missing the mirth.
This sounds analogous to re-booting Airplane! from 1980 to tell the story of 9/11.

Exploiting a real story involving torture and the dismemberment of innocent people for B.O. receipts is not something I will support with my hard-earned $$$.wink.gif

The film, apparently, can be considered an action "comedy" because of its insane story. I don't know if the filmmakers exploited the story for B.O receipts, but I do know it IS a true story involving 3 lunatics who clearly lost contact with reality. We could say that Tarantino has exploited History in his last 2 movies for B.O. receipts, or that Spielberg exploited a real story for B.O. receipts with Schindler... I still fail to see what the issue is with Pain & Gain, or maybe it's just that people (and I don't mean you) think Michael Bay shouldn't be allowed to make crime dramas because Michael Bay is an idiot blah blah blah... rolleyes.gif I'll give the film a chance before judging it.

There are several accounts that say the real story is stranger than what's in the movie.

Besides we live in a country where Elvis was cleared from trying to kill the President only to find his Mississippi Taekwondo master is really to blame and framed him.

ZDT doesn't ignore torture, 5 bucks says an action/comedy P&G will.

I don't have strong feelings on Bay either way.
Some of his stuff has worked for me and some of it hasn't.

Someone should tell that to Michael Bay, who plasters the words "THIS IS A TRUE STORY" over the screen on multiple occassions throughout the movie.

Yeah, I get where you all are coming from.

Having seen it once, it is a macabre comedy in which it is hard to believe that anyone could be so stupid.

OT, but this line just screams for someone to post this photo, so I will.

Seems like even a straight documentary of this story would be absurdly comical in parts, but since I can't imagine Wahlberg and The Rock not trying to portray the killers as somehow likable or sympathetic (ala Jules and Vincent in 'Pulp Fiction'), I can see why the victims' survivors are so offended that the story was turned into a big production with a couple of Hollywood's most popular stars playing the leads.

Then again, if Martin Scorsese had to worry about offending Spider's surviving family members, he might never have made 'Goodfellas.'

Saw this over the weekend. It was entertaining enough. I didn't really get behind any of the characters as they're all scumbags. Which should be right up my alley.wink.gif Thank Gawd Rebel Wilson doesn't have a nude scene. I give it 3/5.

okay.... my, um, "point", was that none of us knows him personally, so I don't see why I would call him a "scumbag"... He does what he does, and millions of people go see his movies, which make billions. So whatever kind of individual he might be, most people seem to enjoy his movies. What makes you think he's a scumbag? That seems a bit extreme to me, that's all.
