XBR960 viewing discomfort, help?

Alright guys I'm having a problem with my XBR960. Viewing the TV makes the muscles around my eyes feel strained and I'm not sure why. I know it sounds weird but it's very hard to view the screen with this problem. I don't have this problem with my other CRT TV or my LED monitor. There are 2 possibilities I can think of that may be causing the problem.

1. There is some viewable noise/static in the image, no matter what the image source is. This could be due to failing parts in the TV or "dirty" power from the AC line. It could probably be reduced by using an AC line filter, which I would have to buy.

2. There seems to be a problem with the green gun, as bright objects leave behind a green trail and when a bright object disappears, a green shadow of it lingers for about half a second.

I think 1 is more likely, because with the TV even looking at a non-moving image gives me the same discomfort. Anyone have any advice, or other ideas as to what might be causing the problem? Thanks a lot!

Sounds like you have not properly set the brightness and contrast. Incorrect contrast can cause eye strain and discoloration. Use a calibration disk to properly set both brightness (dark end of the image) and contrast (bright end of the image) you should not be clipping any colors and when a gray gradient or ramp is displayed there should be no color tint in the bright end.
You can download the AVS disk from the calibration forum, burn to dvd and play it back in a BR player at no cost.

When I used to feel that kind of discomfort I usually found that playing with my contrast/brightness settings helped. In my case I usually lowered the contrast a bit and compensated in the brightness. At least playing with settings is free. What you are describing in #2 sounds like phosphor trailing. I remember Sony CRT TVs and monitors doing this but it never caused me any eye fatigue.

I've already tried messing around with the settings and I was able to reduce the discomfort a little bit, so I'll give calibration a try. Thanks for the advice. Do you guys think the static could also be a factor?

Edit: If I'm gonna calibrate I'll need an accurate DVD player, right? I have an Xbox 360 but I hear that it's not very accurate for DVDs. What's an accurate yet relatively cheap DVD player for calibration?

If convergence is set correctly the green trailing is likely phosphor trailing
Where certian colored phosphors change quicker than others leaving the trailing colors.
I notice it on my rear pro CRT but not on the mid-high end CRT monitor I used to own because computer monitors usually had quicker phosphors.
It could also be convergence, if it isn't set correctly.
Crt's can give many people headaches and eye strain depending on the refresh rate used.
It doesn't bother me and there is some debate over what effect interlacing has on the flicker that causes the problems.
I can't think of any reason it would have not been noticeable on your old CRT though, as they should both be using the same refresh rate.

There isn't anything that can be done about phosphor trailing, it is a well known issue with Plasmas and less so with crt's.

is an ISF calibration treatment an option for your 960?

This calibration can make your picture so life-like you can (almost) touch it!
