Connecting receiver to PC. Optical VS HDMI.

I've been trying to find some info on this but there are so many different answers that I'm hoping someone can clear this up for me. If a pc is connected to a receiver and will be used ONLY for pc video games and music (mostly mp3s) will optical be ok? I understand that HDMI allows more formats like dtshd etc but is there any actual sound quality difference with hdmi vs optical for the 2 things I'd be using it with?

There shouldn't be a sound quality difference in stereo between the 2. If you're wanting surround sound in your games, you'll have to use an encoder like Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect to get a compressed 5.1 stream through Optical (it won't support uncompressed multichannel). Some sound cards and motherboards include DDL or DTSC. I don't think this will sound worse since game audio is compressed anyway - if so it would be subtle.

Thank you very much for clearing this up for me. My sound card supports DDL and DTS interactive so i guess that should work fine. Thanks again.
