Shopping receivers, need to know if this feature is supported...

I am trying to figure out if it is possible to plug in composite (such as a Wii) into a receiver and then use HDMI to my TV, my current receiver I have to run every cable type to my TV in order to use each cable type (composite, component and HDMI) in order to use my various devices; not to mention that I need to run a optical cable for the audio back to my TV. I would like to be able to with a new receiver only have a single HDMI going from my receiver to the TV. So: (1) is this possible (2) what is the name of the feature (3) any suggested models? My current receiver is an Onkyo and I've been perfectly happy with it until now (running low on HDMI spots).

Oh and a really nice to have would be if I could have a second room so a second HDMI out I suppose. I have a projector in my basement that if I could just run an HDMI cable to it that'd be awesome, but not necessary

Yes, most midrange and high end AVR's will convert composite video to HDMI.

Most higher-end AVR's have two HDMI outputs, and some will matrix switch the outputs, displaying different content out of the two connectors.

What is your budget? Do you want independent sources to the PJ and TV at the same time or will the same source to both be okay? Generally at the level of AVR that is required to provide either of these features will also provide for upconverting analog--> HDMI, although with the Wii specifically it's generally much easier to use a Wii2HDMI converter.

What is this feature called? I want to be sure that when I am shopping I can make sure that it's listed. jdsmoothie; I was just using the Wii as an example of what I wanted to do. As I said, I am running out of HDMI ports on my current receiver (which has 4 inputs) so I am already in the market for a new one but I wanted to be sure that the new one has the features that I feel I am lacking currently. Mostly being able to use just a single HDMI cable rather than having to run a single cable of each format from my receiver to my TV. My other wish list item would be to have dual room support (2 HDMI outs) but that isn't a necessity.

What feature are you referring to? Passing the same source to dual HDMI outputs simply requires dual HDMI outputs that can pass video to each output either individually or both at the same time. While being able to pass an independent HDMI source to another Zone is called Zone 2(HDMI), although some higher level models feature it as Zone 4(HDMI).

Appreciate the zone definitions but I was referring to taking composite and being able to have that go through my HDMI out, is this simply "Upscaling via HDMI"?

Ah ... no .... analog --> HDMI "video conversion" ......as "upscaling" refers to taking a lower resolution signal (eg. 480i/p) and upscaling it to 1080p (or as is the case in the newer models, to 4k).

Although the 616 you linked to will "convert" analog--> HDMI, it will only "upscale" 480i from component/composite video to 1080p/4k, so although the Wii would be covered, any device using component cables would have to be set to output 480i.

The Onkyo 818, for example, will output any analog source resolution to HDMI. It also has two HDMI outputs.

That price for the NR809 slowly keeps creeping up. It was $425 earlier, then $445, $470 now $482. It you wait much longer it'll be over $500.
