Ok...All you streaming gurus,come inside please.

I am not sure what I what to do,so I come to you guys to get some suggestions.

I am purchasing a Synology DS413 to store all my video,music,etc so I can access them from my tablet and my pc. I will also use it to backup my pc,control my security cameras,etc.

Now,should I just use the software that Synology has to access all my media files or maybe go with a NAS with a popcorn hour,WD live tv etc? I could also use a Roku with Plex if I wanted to if that is the most preferred setup.

Just not sure what route to take.Let me know what you think.

Please give us a little more info:

Type of files, resolution
More hardware information such as recievers/amps/processors/speakers/displays/etc
budget

Mpeg,Avi,MSK,Mov,Wmv,etc. 1080p

Denon AVR-1910 receiver,Sony Bluray ( soon to be replaced with an Oppo),LG 1080p 47" LED Tv

Not including the NAS, around $500.

I run a Synology 1512+ NAS with the Plex Media Manager running on it, have two Roku's and 2 Sony GTV boxes which act as Plex clients, and much more. The Sony will Direct Play almost everything, minus DTS sound, from the Synology (no transcoding). The Roku's are a close second but can't quite Direct Play everything the Sony boxes do.

The Sony GTV box has an excellent AirPlay app which allows for viewing your iPad videos/pictures/music on a TV.

There are limitations but the Plex Media Server on your Synology will also act as an excellent DLNA server.

The biggest one is that Plex initially will be extremely slow for the first few days on a DS413 as it catalogues the content, once it gets through the bulk of the material it becomes a lot more responsive. A Roku will only play h.264/mkv or mp4 videos so if you want to play other media types via Plex then you will need a GoogleTV box running Plex.

Synology's iOS apps are pretty decent almost as good as Plex you can use both and decide which is better for you.

If you don't care about Plex then a WDTV Live would be fine for the task.

I have an el cheapo Buffalo GB NAS and the WDTV Live SMP streams nearly everything including 1080p fine from it.
Anything that wont stream like say x264 AVC High@L5.1 anime I have a HTPC for.

I tried both out and I like the Synology interface better. So,I'll go with the WDTV Live. Appreciate the help.
