High output, multiple driver DIY main recommendations? - Page 10

Funny you should ask this now as I'm actually making a run at lunch to woodcraft to pick up the hardware. Here is what's on my shopping list - since I was one of the first to pick up this kit, Erich didn't quite have all the hardware ready:

B&C Speakers - #10 x 1.5" black oxide pan head wood screws (8 each required)
Waveguide - #8 x 1.25" black oxide wood screws (4 each required)
Compression driver to wave guide M6 x 16mm with lock washer (2 each required) - already have these and fit great

Oh, I also picked up some gasket tape from PE to use behind the woofs and waveguides. I'm using the 1/8" thick, 0.5" wide speaker gasket tape for both.

Just got back from Woodcraft. Man, I love that place. It's a good thing I had to get back to work or I would have spent a LOT more money. Next I think I've talked myself into doing one of the DIY dust deputy separators. Pretty cool IMO.

I picked up an assortment of black oxide wood screws from #6 to #10 to have 'in stock' for this build and future builds. They have some really nice hardware there, although it's a bit more expensive than your local HD or lowes stuff.

Now that these speakers are basically constructed, I'm going to build some proper stands for them. The stands will essentially be an extension of the actual cabinets. I have the cutlist ready but have to find some time to go pick up the wood. I will NOT be using MDF again though.

The larger size black wood screws they have are a 'round washer' type screw in square drive. I didn't see any traditional pan head screws anywhere, they seem to stock these type instead which was fine with me anyway since they accomplish the same thing. In the #10 x 1.5" black oxide they were quite pricey at 9.25 for a pack of 100. Then again a pack of 100 goes a long way 100/8 = 12 kits. I can confirm fitment when I get home today.

Edit - the 10 x 1 1/4" are only 6.89 for 100:

It's funny almost everywhere I checked had some type of black #8 screw, but the #10's seem a bit harder to find. Up until now I've just been spraying my zinc #10s black, but they seem to chip rather easily while installing.

I agree there is a lot going on inside a woodcraft store. Fortunately, most of the sections are well labeled so you can find what you're looking for rather quickly. The downside is there is so much cool stuff it's easy to get distracted.

I agree, the square head is probably not common enough for most guys to use, but apparently it is superior in terms of slip protection.

2 coats of Duratex, done. Also busted out crossover #3 while the first coat was drying. Waiting to try and watching some TV with the wife now.

Thanks guys. I spent all morning 7-12 getting them finished up. I still had a bit more work than I thought. But they are DONE! I only have about 10 minutes before we leave for the auto show but I did get to listen to a few tracks in 2 channel. No EQ/distance settings/Audyssey yet but they sound AWESOME!! Midbass is better than a lot of the 'smaller' subs that I had in my room. Clarity is top notch as well as imagine. Can't wait to give them a thorough listen and calibration later tonight. I took a LOT of pics which I will upload the rest later.

MANY more comments coming as well as pictures - stay tuned.

Thank you sir. I have the EP4000 on them now and they take EVERYTHNG the amp can throw at them. I had them up to +15 (not yet level matched) where the EP4000 taps out (clip lights) and they're screaming away, cleanly!

I don't know if I've seen many on here yet either? Erich reccomended I try it and I think it blends well with the B&C woof and duratex finish.



I'm also anxiously waitin to calibrate them and give them a proper listen too!
