I have seen this discussed in great detail about how annoying it is that Onkyo did not include Zone 1 12V triggers on this series of amps, but has anyone found a workaround or any way to get 12V triggers to work with your main zone?

Im surprised you got no reply, there are a couple of options. If you dont have a switched power outlet on the avr you can use a "smart strip"....
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P1QJXQ/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Then you sacrifice an old wall wart and attach the 3.5mm to the end of the wall wart cable, plug that into the controlled outlet on the smart strip.
