No, not even remotely close.

LED-LCD blacks have two things this design would lack (1) a dark backplane behind the LC layer. That absorbs whatever hits it, because it's non-reflective. (2) Color filters and polarizers in addition to the LC layer. All of those absorb some light, making LCD TVs very good at looking dark in a bright room. You could still have polarizers on your "LCD layer" thingy, but it will make it even less transparent. You can't have color filters or else it will look, well, colored. Your room's paint is reflective on purpose to keep your room from looking too dark.

It would be nowhere near as dark as an LED-LCD TV and would have a fraction the contrast.

Oh, and as for that stand, I guess I posted over in the LCD forum, but, yes, the 85" has about the most hideous revolting stand design ever. The F series is infinitely more beautiful because, well, the standard is so horrid.

It's plenty ugly too. Most people on this forum could have designed more elegant stands in 5 minutes. Why do they try to reinvent a stand, anyway? I thought we reached the pinnacle of TV stand design years ago.

It's like they had finally perfected a wheel, saw it working perfectly, then said: "It's about time we redesigned it."

I didn't find this article too terribly informative, unlike the one about Panasonic's 2013. That article unveils literally every FP for 2013. Both this one and the Samsung one I find to be vague. Oh well. Still informative to an extent

Once again I see more evolutionary and nothing revolutionary. The white brightness increase of 250% from Samsung's top of the line Plasma caught my eye. Hopefully that comes from a massive power efficiency increase. Maybe that will decrease the buzz levels...

I would love to get another Samsung plasma but my Sharp has me hooked. It will take something special to get me to downsize 6 inches or more... Especially if Sharp keeps improving their 80 and 90 inch LCDs.

Oh, and what is up with everyone making some stupidly ugly stands? What happened to keep it simple?

It's probably just a test to see what dummy uses a stand and doesn't mount an 85 on the wall. For those who fail this test are not ready for an 85inch display and punishment is an ugly stand and turn in their HT membership card.

Being that they supplanted the GT series for the VT and supplanted the VT for the ZT it remains to be seen. That being said, I can't wait to see a ZT60 and play around with it. I'm excited. Like a kid at Christmas. Hopefully it can rival the Kuro. The VT50 did a damn good job.

I agree. This is the CES 2013 Thread. I am only interested in the new TVs etc that are on show, not views about transparent LED, white subs, Apple patents, etc. These are valid points and views but perhaps should be continued on other more relevant Threads.

They seem to have overlooked the Triluminos Display LED backlighting utilising QD Vision’s ColorIQ optical component, Gorilla Glass 3, and a completely redesigned speaker system.

It certainly seems like it could be possible this year, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up until the sets are actually available, unless they have a demo next to one of the KRPs. The last two generations of Panasonic plasma were “Kuro killers” until sets were actually available to be tested. Still, they do talk about a new driving system on the ZT series.

^I never saw (nor believed) the claim from anyone with any credibility that previous year models were "Kuro killers." Maybe the reporting/hype sites.

Sorry, I only referenced the transparent stuff because of the ridiculous idea Samsung was going to announce a transparent OLED TV this year.

Instead, their "revolutionary" product was an 85" OLED with the world's ugliest industrial design!

EDIT -- YES YES, I meant 85" 4K LCD.... Sorry for the typo/brain freeze.

The stand is awful. Perhaps they should have concentrated on a transparent stand instead.

Now, that would have been something.

Incidentally, I did some "what if" if my living room and I concluded that while I could in theory accommodate a 90" Sharp or even maybe a 110" something or other, I'd have to throw out all my furniture -- and everything it stores -- to fit this Samsung monstrosity. The other TVs would fit awkwardly and I wouldn't really want them for a lot of reasons, but they'd be plausible. The Samsung would fit in none of the rooms of my house under any realistic circumstances. What were they thinking?

I believe Rogo made an error here. It's my understanding the "revolutionary" product is not an 85" OLED but instead is a 4K LED.

In ANY case, new ugly stands, new announced technology, new sizes, new bad ideas, are all directly connected to particular announcements, so at least those ought to be here.

And you bet: the sizes are getting nuts.

That thing is supposed to be a "Timeless Design" ??? I'm one of the (probably few) that like that stand, but that's not exactly something that's always been, and always will be.

LOL. I want my 3 minutes and 7 seconds back. These two sound like highschoolers.

$25,000 for a television is just so far beyond what even a hopeless AV nut like me can even fathom that it's just plain freakin hilarious to me.
