Which Receiver Should I Go With?

Thread Starter
Putting together my new audio system for both movies and music, but I am having a hard time picking a receiver. I will be using BnW CM9's CMC2, CM1s and a SUperCube 2000. I have always like the pioneer elites, but am now thinking Denon or Marantz as well. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Max budget? Features/inputs/outputs required?

Well I figure most receivers will have at least 5 hdmi, airplay would be nice too. as far as budget goes, I'm not terribly worried about that, keeping in mind a 5-10k$ receiver is way out of my budget. haha:cool:

Then consider the latest offerings from Denon and Marantz ... the Denon 4520CI and the pre-pro from Marantz the AV-8801 both of which offer the most advanced version of Audyssey MultEQ XT32 and have their own dedicated Owner's threads in which to learn more.

I went to Magnolia today, listened to the Marantz 7007, and I liked it! But I was also concerned with the Movie playback aspect. The mag guy said that Marantz was geared towards music not movies, which this will be a multi use system. Any thoughts?

and the 8801 I think is a little out of my budget as well. I still have to buy the speakers! haha cool.gif

I am not a huge fan of Marantz. They got some kind of anti-establishment I hate you ...you love me thing going. Not that they terrible but for my two cents I would hit the Denon 2113CI.

If you want to step it up a notch go for the Onkyo 818...but beware there are some reports of reliability problems with Onkyo.

You know that Denon and Marantz are owned by the same company, and are virtually identical inside? The differences now seem to be mostly cosmetic.

First note that Best Buy doesn't run the Auto EQ setups in their demo models so you'll have a much better experience once the unit is in your home and you have a chance to run the Auto EQ program (eg. Audyssey). The 7007 should serve you well with either music or movies and is comparable to Denon's 3313CI.

I know, but somehow whenever I go to Best Buy, the Marantz sound better. They tend to cost more for comparable models so maybe Best Buy is doing something.

Marantz's claim to be geared towards music is marketing, as their higher end stuff (which you are looking at) will perform very well in both phases. However, I would give the Denon 4520CI some serious consideration, if it is in your $ range and will not impact your speaker budget (you do not want to skimp there). Just my 0.02. Have fun!

In the same price range as the Marantz 7007, I would also look at the Onkyo NR1010 and even the step-down NR818... feature-for-feature quite similar, both with a heftier amp section than the Marantz. The kicker is both Onkyo models have Audyssey MultEQ XT 32 where the 7007 only has MultEQ XT You could even grab the NR818 + an Emotiva Amp (XPA-3 or XPA-5) for the same or less than the NR1010 or Marantz 7007.

Sorry for the late reply all, thank you all for the information. I was considering an SC-61, then I talked to my friend who works at a Magnolia Design Center, he was actually the one who recomended the 6006 or 7007. I told him some of the info I saw on here and he said that the build quality and processing is much better in the Marantz vs the Denon OR Pioneer. Thoughts?
The processing on the Marantz will be the same on the equivalent Denon. They're sister companies. What you will get on the Marantz is a few extra inputs, extra speaker Zones and maybe an optical output.

The SR6006 and SR7007 are pretty close to the Denon 3312 and 3313.

So I went again today and listened to the 3313 and 7007 and sc-61 Then 61 sounded great with movies/ the marantz was awesome with music, but the denon had qualities of both which I liked!

Great! Be sure to review posts #3-6 in the Denon AVR-XX13 Owner's thread linked in my sig for helpful setup and troubleshooting tips (especially with network configuration suggestions).
