Appleply + Tempest-X New Sub Build

I just picked up two sheets of 1" Appleply and one sheet 1/2". Going to build two subwoofers using two Tempest-X 15" woofers per box. The boxes will be 6 cu ft, 1-1/2" fronts and tops and 1" on sides, backs and bottoms with internal bracing. I'll probably do 3/4" roundovers on all edges and paint black with Duratex. Since they will be pretty heavey, I was thinking of mounting them on casters. Any thoughts on that? The subs will be driven by Sanway FP9000 amps.

I'll post pictures once I start cutting.

I started cutting panels today and except for the tops and bottoms, they are all done. I have to decide whether I go with rabits or but joints before I cut those as it will make a slight difference in size. Appleply is heavy; I would guess that the 1" appleply is heavier than a sheet of 3/4" MDF. This is the first time that I have used the Festool parallel guide and it is wonderful tool. Highly recommended if you can swing the price. I couldn't have done this on my table saw. Here is a pic of the setup used for cutting:



Next up is to route the cutouts for the drivers.

Just look at the blue post all the way to the left bolted to the cement floor with the yellow finger underneath the yellow car holding it up. tongue.gif Forget the speakers let see more pics of the cars!!!

You're cutting wood with those cars sitting right there!? Hang a tarp or something man!

S2000 has rebuilt turbocharged forged engine with 580whp. The ZO6 has rebuilt forged supercharged engine with a little over 800 whp, coilover suspension, all custom leather interior. I can post pictures if interested.

The dust collection with Festool tools is almost 100%.

Sorry for taking so long to respond, but for some reason I'm not getting notices of responses to my post. Yet, I'm getting notices to other post I'm subscribed to. What gives?

Impressive number for an S2K. I don't wanna hijack the thread, just another fan of the S2000. Those sound like some very fun toys you have there.

I plan to paint the subs with Duratex so I have a few questions. The speakers are going to be 46" tall by 18-1/2" deep and 19"wide. I'm probably going to use the roller grade Duratex. For two coats and the leather style finish, is one gallon enough or should I order two?

I've made some progress. All the panels are cut and glue up has started. My clone FP9000 amp arrives on Thursday so I need to get these done. Here are some pictures:

It looks like a nice space with some great equipment. What dust collector do you use? Do you like the Excalibur over-arm guard? Is the guard plumbed into your central dust collection or do you have it hooked to a shop vac?

All the stationary tools are hook up to the central dust collector (except drill press) which is an Oneida Air Systems Pro 1500. Both the Excaliber and the Powermatic saw are hooked to the dust extraction. Next time I post some pictures of my sub build I'll include more pictures of the shop. I just built the detached garage/shop two years ago and finally got the dust collection system set up this past summer. It really makes woodworking a lot more pleasurable. After the two sub's are finished I'll start building shop cabinets,

Lots of progress made on my build. Just finished epoxying the 1-1/2" front baffle to the boxes. Now I have to wait until tomorrow to do a 3/4" round over to all the edges. By the time the Duratex gets her on Thursday I'll be ready for paint. Here are some pictures:


This is the epoxy I used to put it all together. This is great stuff, but its $22 a tube.

That's some expensive glue. PL Premium is like $5 a tube.

True, but 2 tubes will do the whole project if you're not wasteful. After seeing guys on this forum buying 8 SI 18" woofers, do you really think $44 of epoxy is too much? tongue.gif Other than the internal braces which were set in rabbits, everything else was put together with but joints and I don't trust PL Premium for those.

I'm sure the subs will be great but your shop is awesome! It's not common to see a hobbyist shop with enough space to permit a nice layout of stationary tools like that. With central dust collection, to boot! In my shop, to put anything much longer than 8' through the big tools requires opening doors ...

Thanks for the comments. After I retired and moved from Dallas to the Seattle area I promised myself that we would buy a house that had enough property to build a shop. That was 7 years ago. Three years ago I finally got the OK from my wife to build my mancave. Its not finished yet but I'm getting close. I need to make a lot of cabinets and the subwoofer is warming me up for that project.

Finally the woodworking is done.



Next step is paint. I'm thinking of primering it with flat black paint before I apply the Duratex. Teh Duratex doesn't get her until Friday so that will give me something to do tomorrow. Also, what type roller should I get to apply the Duratex?
