Basscube 10s Died - Need Replacement

Ok, so, not something that audiophiles can really sink your teeth into, but I would appreciate any assistance you can offer.

Current Setup:

Fronts/Center - Polk RM201 x 3
Surrounds - Polk RM101s x 2
Subwoofer - Cambridge Soundworks Basscube 10s (Deceased)
Reciever - Onkyo TX-SR605


Im looking for something that has at least as much power (75w 10" downfiring active sub). So 100w is probably suitable. Smallish room. 80% Movies/TV and 20% Music. I liked the way the CSW sounded, and it's painfully obvious that it's missing frown.gif

A few i've found on Craiglist nearby:



Boston Accoustics PV600 - $75

Boston Accoustics PV500 - $200

Sony SAW3000 - $100

Klipsch KSW12 - $150

CSW P205 - $200



As you can tell, my budget is pretty small, and my system isnt that needy of a monster sub. (Not until i get that big promotion). So, just looking for something to get me by for now and looking for the best bang for my buck that fits my system.

Or, if there are any other deals out there on the interwebs that would be better than the selection above. Thanks ago so much for the advice!

Have you checked out the budget subwoofers thread? You may find something nice listed there. Given your price constraints one choice worth considering is the Martin Logan Dynamo 300. That may work.

There's also the Polk PSW 505, as well as the BIC V 1220 and F12. Any of these last three should easily eclipse the Cambridge CrapWorks sub.

Thanks for the insight JimWilson, much appreciated.

Im assuming that the ones you recommended are superior to the used subs i listed that i found on CL?

From the ones you recommend, i would probably go with Polk given that i have their products in my setup already and have had very good luck with them in other applications (Computer Audio, Car Audio, etc).

I'm a fan of new, for the most part, so that's why I suggested those. The Polk sub isn't the most musical, but it should be OK for movies and TV. Since that's the vast majority of what you anticipate using it for I suspect it will be fine. I'm certain it will have more output then the CS sub did.

Just wanted to come full circle on this thread. I was about to purchase the Polk PSW505 but a friend gave me a Velodyne CT120 for free. It's a 175W 12" Downfiring Sub. About $600 new in 2002 and has been sitting around for many years collecting dust.

I hooked it up and it sounds great, now to get everything recalibrated.

A 10+ year old sub is certainly not a long term solution, but it's hard to argue with free. Have fun with your new toy!

True, I still almost went for the Polk anyways, but i figured i'd at least give the Velo a try first and it blows away the 75W 10" CSW Basscube i had and it fits and sounds great in the spot i have available.

Jim, thanks again for your assistance. I now just need to tweak my receiver and sub to blend with my other speakers. Would you mind taking a look at the post i made in the Setup section?
