Speaker placement advice?

Hey! So, I've been using 2.1 for a while now, and am finally planning to move up to 5.1. However, space in my room is VERY tight. The only place I'd be able to put surround speakers is BEHIND the couch, instead of beside it as most suggest. For this reason I am considering bipole speakers, as it seems I can place them behind my couch where there is room.

Here's my question, however. It's a rectangular room. The wall is 12 feet or so away from the back of the couch. This means the bipoles would be on stands. is it fine that there's no wall directly behind them for reverberation? the area to the immediate left of the couch is also slightly open

here's a really poor paint drawing. the rectangle is the couch, line towards the top is the TV, two small squares beside it are the current front speakers.

Thanks for any advice!

Monopoles might be a better choice since you have open space behind the couch and no side wall on the left.

Thanks for the response. Would it be okay to place monopole speakers behind the couch in a 5.1 setup? I had thought that was something you only did for bipoles.

Of course, many people (myself included) prefer to have monopolies for surrounds (especially for multi-channel music).

I had just thought that if monopoles were to be used for surrounds, they would have to face the listener from the sides, not the back (in a 5.1 setup anyway).

Dolby recommendations and my setup from center chair (not a god pic but...).
