WMC too dark compared to MPC-HC

I've been trying to decide if I can see enough of a difference in video quality to use MPC-HC/Lav/MadVR over WMC. I love the simplicity of WMC, but not at the expense of quality. I currently rip to MKV and use Shark007 to play blu ray rips in WMC.

WMC looks much better than MPC-HC -- but that's because I apparently have my tv set to torch mode to compensate for WMC being so dark. MPC-HC looks awful because my tv is so bright.

Why is WMC so dark? Is it a setting? Or is there a setting in MPC-HC I'm missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

According to what I've read WMC uses the limited 16-235 color space & many other players use the full 0-255 full range. This may make a difference when calibrating your TV. WMC7 looked great to me, until a added a video card. The default video card settings where also 16-235 and I was getting a double conversion & washed out colors. However there is a simple registry hack which changes WMC to 0-255. Then one of the video card settings gave me a picture which was too dark. IOW it may be a combination of settings that is affecting you.

Take a look at this recent thread.

WMC can do 0-255 if you set it up properly

On the Config TAB of the Shark007 Settings Application is a checkbox for [x] MC Sharpen
This box toggles the color range used by Media Center

EDITTED for clarity

I went through WMC's "Configure Your TV or Monitor" but did not see "MC Sharpen". Perhaps it's down a path I never took. How do you get to it?

Previously when I searched there were several results similar to this one. I just did the last registry mod mentioned in message #6.

It is not in the Media Center settings but in the Shark007 settings when you install his application.

That's a good reason I didn't find it. I'm running WMC7 without any addons, except for that one registry mod.

No.

There is no recommendation. Many users will see no difference at all.
Some users see improvement most evident with black being black instead of greyish looking.
Test for yourself and make your own conclusion.

FYI, the setting only affects Media Center playback. No other player (external) is affected.

You want complex? Try this.

- The Nvidia card in my HTPC has a full/limited RGB setting
- WMC has a full/limited RGB setting
- LAV decoder has a full/limited RGB setting
- MadVR has a full/limited RGB setting
- My Denon 4311ci (used to pass all video to the projector) has a full/limited RGB setting
- The projector (Mitsubishi HC3800) has a full/limited RGB setting.

tongue.gif Try juggling all those settings.

My HTPC, WMC, LAV decoder, Denon 3312 and Optoma projector all have the same...

I feel your pain.

Thanks Shark -- I will give that setting a try and see what happens.

@Mike99 -- thanks for the link. I have some reading to do. I was under the impression that the best thing to do is to just set everything to video levels... maybe not.

@kapone and @Mfusik -- so how do you guys handle your settings?
