Tower Speakers, HDTV - Direct connection

Have a great HDTV but the sound is terrible. Has anyone tried unhooking the internal TV speakers and wiring tower speakers directly to the TV (without using an external amp)? How is the sound?

Trying to get away with having to buy ANOTHER 5.1 amp but still getting semi-decent sound.

The results likely depend a lot on which TV and which speakers. How much power does the TV's internal amp have? What is the impedance of the internal TV speakers? Does the TV have any eq applied? What is the impedance and sensitivity of the external speakers?

IMO, you would be better off using a small, simple amp, such as a t-amp, to power the external speakers. Or some self-powered speakers.
