Samsung 3D DVD Players not playing certain movies - PLEASE READ!

We just bought a Samsung BD-E6500 because we were told the upgraded model would play the movies our lower model would not. Wrong. Our firmware is updated. We were told by the Live Chat tech guy that the issue would be resolved with the next update. Well, the earlier tech guy who got me to the most recent update said the most recent update would fix the problem. So I'm not holding out much hope. I am wondering: is it movies from specific companies whose formatting does not work with the Samsung players? If so, lets all just not buy movies produced from those companies. Let's see how Samsung handles that piece of advertising. Here's a list of our 3D movies, their film company, and whether or not they played in either of our two Samsung 3D Blu-Ray players:

The Amazing Spider-Man in 3D, Columbia Pictures. NO
Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs 3D, 20th Century Fox. NO
Wrath of the Tians 3D, Warner Brothers. YES
Transformers Dark of the Moon, Paramount. YES
Brave, Disney. YES

Let's start an experiment. Add to this list. If I see more movies from Sony or Fox in the NO column, I for one will not spend another penny for their movies. Nothing against them......I just want Samsung to get their you-know-what together. However I could be completely wrong...I'm curious though. Aren't you?!

I am sorry to hear that you are having problems. samsung blu ray players are considered the worse kind. you are better off with a panasonic or oppo.

this forum has great info and experts that can help find a better player.

I beleive the player speaks for itself.. the customer service is no help.
yes I had experience with both panasonic and oppo.

Agreed! They are at fault in regards to the E series firmware and customer service has proven useless for this issue. I'm not playing the role of a fanboy here.
Interesting that you didn't mention having actual experience with Samsung, but now that I've mentioned it, you've probably owned several and have since gone with Panasonic and Oppo.
I'm not knocking Panasonic or Oppo, but I'm sure if I check the threads on those devices that I would find some unhappy folks with issues.

you read the forums about the players. since hte beginning of blu ray. there was always talk of how bad the samsung player were. now that blu ray is very popular. I will say that no player is perfect. some do better then others. I have an oppo 93 and a ps3 slim. I have owned several panasonic players. I did own a samsung at one time. it was very brief.I owned a samsung rear projection tv actually. I was not that impressed with the customer service. I now own a 3D panasonic plasma.

I think you will find a differnt player to be your best bet. you just have to do the research.

We bought a Samsung 3D Smart TV and the dvd player was a freebie. I normally do look at customer/expert reviews and did so with the TV. The folks at Best Buy let us trade-in the freebie (with no box and we got to keep the 8 pairs of glasses that came with the player)....we got the BD-E6500 for ~$50. Best Buy always does us right. I've got the receipt showing the original player model somewhere but just moved prior to Christmas....who knows where it is at the moment! I wish I could list it but feel comfortable saying it is a lower end model.

If this is an issue you have not experienced, google something like "samsung will not play spiderman 3d". It is widespread.

I know the issue is with Samsung and not the movie companies. My point is not to target those companies because it's their fault.....my point is to target those companies so THEY can pressure Samsung to fix the issue NOW so that people can purchase their movies. As it stands, the movies I buy in the future will not be released from 20th Century Fox or Columbia (I incorrectly said it was Sony in my first post) until I know the formatting issue is resolved. I'm trying to hit Samsung from both sides.

But being a curious sort, I'd like to know if other people have other 3D movies released from these two companies that will not work in their Samsung players. Is it all movies from these two companies?? Only certain movies?? I gotta know man!

If we could keep this string to just listing movies that would be great! Can't find these puppies in the $5 bin and I only want to buy what I know I can watch......

I have the Samsung D6700 because i needed the dual hdmi outputs. This may or may not fix your problem, but i was initially unable to play The Sound Of Music. I changed the BD Live setting to "Allow (Valid Only) and haven't had a problem with any blu-ray discs since, including The Sound Of Music.

Hmmm, I have the 6500. Spiderman played after an unplug of the cord, and no problem with Ice Age 4. Maybe its your unit, and you have to exchange it? I have no explanation other than that as to why they would play on my 6500 and not yours. I'm updated, btw.

Sorry! That was Ice Age 4! Dawn is 3. But Spiderman works without issue now, ever since the unplug reboot. Boring as hell other than the last half hour, wasn't worth getting, but it works on my 6500

She has the E series and you have the D series. The issue appears to be with Samsung E series, not all Samsung players.

Every movie I've played so far has worked. Those include Prometheus and Tron 3D. I'm okay with The Amazing Spiderman not working, I wouldn't waste my money on it anyways. The next 4-5 3D disc released will be the true test on the Blu Ray players compatibility. If it doesn't work, I'll take it back to Best Buy as I just got it last week. The way technology moves anymore, I'm surprised last years blu ray's even work...

I gave up on my D5500 after it wouldn't play Avatar in both 2D and 3D.
I've had other pain in the butt problems with it in the past but not being able to load Avatar was the last straw.
Did have the latest update.
Got a Sony S590 and it works flawlessly. I think the up-converting of regular DVDs look somewhat better also.

Just got the latest update 1053.7 or something. Had to download it from there site and use a USB for the update. I have the e6500 and I am happy to say spider man and resident evil retribution the 2 movies I couldn't watch in 3d now work smile.gifsmile.gif

Yep! Success!! We haven't been watching any movies lately so I haven't seen if there is a new software version. But I downloaded it last night and am happy to report that both the Spiderman and Ice Age movies work!! I didn't write down the new version number but just do the download from your Settings option on your dvd player. I feel comfortable purchasing more 3D movies from these companies now.

I do have to say I'm disappointed with the Spiderman movie.....not nearly as much 3D action as one would think given the flying from building to building thing. I thought it would get better as the movie went on with Peter being filmed more and more as Spiderman. Was SM 3D at the movie theaters? I don't remember. So if it wasn't and therefore not filmed originally in a 3D format, whatever "they" did to produce a 3D film isn't too impressive. It's the first 3D movie in our collection I would say is not worth the money. But Ice Age was really cool. I love watching movies more than once cuz you pick up on dialog you missed earlier. It's such an entertaining movie.

I have one of their portable Blu Ray players that can output 3d and it won't play any newer 3d disks. The firmware hasn't been updated for that player since 2011. Terrible support...I would never buy another Samsung product...well other than my SIII phone.. smile.gif

Oh man....sorry to hear that. If they haven't updated the FW since 2011....its probably not going to happen....as you well know by now. There is probably an upgraded player on the market by now that other people are getting ripped off with. I have always had good luck with Samsung products. But after this situation we will definitely take a closer look at other Samsung products before buying them. I subscribe to Consumer Reports and look up stuff online. We didn't research the DVD player because it came as a freebie with the TV. We're happy as can be with the TV.

Im having major issues with my Samsung 3d dvd player to the point were im ready to take a sledge hammer to it mid film !! It stops it starts it freezes sound and picture and now its taken to telling me that the latest discs are not compatible yet they play faultlessly on my brothers blu ray player . I am completely loyal to the Samsung brand tv,dvd,soundbar,fridge , laptop,mobile phone and have been for years ! I paid top money for this system bouyght at the same time as the tv and soundbar also to find that I cant use one remote to control the 3 systems even though currys said they would !
Offtrack a little so back to the dvd ive just tried playing REAL STEEL and it wont even load saying "THIS DISC DOES NOT FIT SPECIFICATIONS" . Ive updated the software but Last night I watched .. tried to watch THE DARK NIGHT RISES , with multiple freezing and sound issues wrecking the enjoyment of the film and being usure how much of it between skips ive actually missed . I thought I hadn't set stuff up properly or it was my player but sitting trawling through the net and the amount of people having the same problem I think Samsung should recall and re imburse I don't see why I should have to go out and purchase another player that will do the job when I paid good money for this one and it will only play older films and my kids non blue ray films without these issues ! These aren't even the 3d versions of the films either by the way !!

I ended up throwing away my Samsung c6900 after only two years of light to moderate use as it would constantly skip and freeze on a variety of 3d blurays despite my always keeping the firmware up to date. I originally tried replacing it with an E5900 which ended up being DOA right out of the box. I've had far better luck with Panasonic and LG players since then.

Having the exact same issues with my Samsung D6700. I do get the discs to eventually load, but it takes 5-10 minutes of turning the player on and off and repeated loadings. Of course, the freeze-up/skip sometimes might still occur...especially at a layer change. While the PQ is great on the Sammy players, longevity is not their strong suit.
