Porting speakers to the front or the rear?

Just wondering what type of difference this might make? It obviously assumes where in the room you plan to place the speakers, but assuming away from the rear wall about a foot, does it make much of a difference either way?

None. Rear placement is usually employed when it's desirable to keep the cabinet front dimensions as small as possible.

Apparently more than you'd think.

I had the same question in my mind a couple days ago and found this:

edit with respect to BFM who apparently clicked the submit button just before I did: The link above has to do with leakage of higher frequencies out the port. I'm sure actual performance of the port does not change.

Funny enough I've been contemplating the same. I'm very interested in a 15" SEOs build, but the vented baffle is just a couple inches too high to fit under my screen as the center. For this reason I've been thinking of either doing rear port or front slot port.
