What could cause A 5 disc Sony cd changer to be weird skipping tracks

It does it on regular CDs and not just CDs that are scratched. It just started doing this recently. It will skip back to part of the previous song while the next song is playing. It won't be the whole previous song but part of it. I do not understand this. It is scary and freaking me out. Has this happened to anyone?

Could be dust or dirt/oil on the laser or receiver inside the player. Lasers gradually diminish in output, reducing the player's ability to correctly receive the data from the disc. Another possibility is the transport (mechanics) itself causing the skipping. A cleaning might solve the problem; best done by a tech as you do not want to accidentally misalign the transport. There could also be a problem in the decoding electronics but that is less likely IME.
