Is brightness as much about balance and driver size in a speaker as manufacturer?

I was at the store listening to speakers and before listening I absolutely ruled out Klipsch. Too high from what I could recollect from a pair of speakers I used to have. I was listening to the "low end" Polk Tsi300 floorstanders. They were "bright." I decided to listen to the Klipsch. They didn't sound near as bright (KF10). After looking at the specs I saw the Klipsch had the 6.5 drivers and the Polks had the 5.25 drivers.

So maybe the so called brightness can be because of the size of the drivers combined with the tweeter (which were both 1", btw).

I'm also wondering if any speaker can be made to sound pleasent given the right settings on the receiver and perhaps that I should rule out any speaker and look for drivers that suit my ear and listen.

Is this wrong thinking?

"brightness" is generally an exaggerated response somewhere in the upper mids. Causes include driver resonances, driver breakup modes, cabinet resonances, bad crossover design, listening in one of the positions where you get too much gain in that zone (there are dead zones and boosted zones: their location is determined to a good extent by the crossover design) , etc.

And, of course, the room. Put reflective surfaces in the right places and it gets nasty.

(of course, conversely, a room can be unequally damped and dull the same frequencies a "bright" speaker emphasizes.

Exactly. Most complaints about speakers, IMO, are people who have them badly placed, and/or in a bad room.

I wonder if that's why a speaker sounds brighter in a big open store?
