Using 360 as extender, HD content looks horrible

Hello.

I need some help. I recently started using my 360 to stream movies from my pc using windows media center. I have some 1080p mkv files that I have been trying to play. They play, but the quality is horrible. Very grainy and they have fps issues. My network is hard wired, but it is about a 5 year old router. I installed the mkv codec back on my pc. I am running windows 7 ultimate. I have played some 720p content x.264 that looked fine. Any suggestions on what could be wrong?

From my experience with the 360 as an extender it just doesn't have the muscle to play 1080p content. I've tried and have the same experience as you even on a hardwired connection. I just encode all my movies/content as 720p WMV files and works fine, especially for me as I don't have a 1080p set anyway. If you want smooth 1080p probably have to setup a dedicated HTPC.
