Building a surround sound

I am a newbie. I have about 300$ to spend on my speakers and sub. I want 5.1. What is the best set of speakers I can get for this money. Also ill have about 200$ to spend on the receiver. Factory Refurb products don't bother me. Please help thank you.

With that budget I'd forget about the .1 and concentrate on the 5. Any sub in that budget range will not be a 'sub'. If $300 is all you have for speakers you should buy the best 2 used speakers in your area that you can find. If you get lucky and find a center channel that matches the mains thats even better. I'm sure you'll agree that a decent 2.0 or 2.1 setup would be better than a crappy 5.1 - right?
