Also let the pj run for about 30 mins before making any focus or alignment adjustments.

So, shouldn't the projector be given some time to season before any adjustments are made? Any thoughts?

Somewhere around 400 hrs at least, I'm just now noticing a little less brightness in my bulb at just over 900 hrs. Hdmi handshakes need no break-in, they will occur or not, but turning on the components in a specific order can factor into getting a proper "handshake".

Didn't try any 3D last night, just 2D. Reversed my usual order with my JVC and turned on the Oppo and Sony receiver FIRST.
Sure enough, the Epson projector came on with both picture and sound no problem. Now I'll try this with 3D and see if that does fix it all the way (couldn't last night as I was having a "show" and didn't want to interrupt it for the audience).

While as I've said the 2D picture is not as smooth as the JVC, it is true that the increased brightness adds a pleasant factor in my large screen/long throw set-up. Hmmmm,,,

Oh, and to add that I find the blacks on the Epson surprisingly good, and again this from a JVC owner. Now with my long throw and 1.1 gain screen, black levels are not a problem in my set-up compared to some folks, but still, this is looking to be a good value to me.
If I can get a reliable 3D handshake, no doubt in my mind i'm keeping this unit.

Have had my 5020ub for about 3 weeks and just noticed a hairline crack on the lense; about 0.5 cm or less in size and in about the middle of the lense

Maybe it was always there; I'm going to contact epson about it but it doesn't seem to impact the picture quality; it's really hard to see when off but completely obvious when on and light from the projector in coming through and shining on it

I was told by my dealer that the projector should be turned on after the receiver (which the P is connected). So much for universal remote convenience of turning everything on at once. Still waiting for the Epson 5020UBe to arrive. As I said earlier, mid-late January. Hope they meant this year!

OK, I got the 12V trigger to work now.

Basically the cable I tried to use before is only designed for audio signals, so no good here.
So I made a cable myself, cutting off one end of a cat5 ethernet cable to connect it to a standard stereo jack.

Here's how
-> brown/white cable (12V) to T (Tip)
-> brown (ground) to S (Sleeve)
-> no connection to R (Ring)
-> also cut off all other cables
Connected the ethernet cable to my elite screen and just works fine :-)

What is the super-res button on the remote?

You should be able to specify the order of power on with your universal remote along with any required delays.

I was always on the assumption that you could pick the order? but then again I'm still working with 6 different remotes smile.gif its kinda funny getting ready for a movie

I'm just about to pull the trigger on a 5020UBe, but I have a few questions for the owners...

1) How does the 3D look? Is it still a "mixed bag" or has everybody got it working smoothly now?

2) How is gaming? I have an older Epson TW1000 and never had a lag problem that I noticed... The 5020UBe can't be worse, can it?

3) What non Epson 3D glasses are confirmed to work?

4) Do I need the official Epson mount to put the projector on the ceiling? If not, how did you guys mount it?

Thanks so much!!!

Ok, so looking to purchase a 5020, but projector noobieness here...Can anyone explain to me what I am gaining with a 5020 over a 3020? I have looked at all the specs and read both forums now. Will be projecting onto a 100" screen at about 12 to 15 feet. Thanks!

Primarily, you get significantly better contrast and a better picture overall. If your projection venue has good light control, the improvement in the picture would be easily seen. Also, you get lens shift, which gives you much more flexibility in where you mount the projector. You will also get higher resale value if you ever sell it.

The 5020 adds CFI for 3d as well I think. oh, and 2 pair of glasses and THX. http://www.projectorreviews.com/epson/home-cinema-5020/competitors.php

I posted something similar to the following in the "NEW EPSON HOME CINEMA 3020, 5020 and 6020" thread but I thought this might be useful to folks here as well.

I got great alignment on my 5020 simply by avoiding subpixel adjustments. By limiting the 5020 to non-fractional pixel adjustments, you avoid the nasty color artifacts caused by "faking" subpixel adjustments. To do this, you perform the 4-corner pixel adjustment on the R and B colors, but for each corner you only adjust in increments of 10. And make sure all 4 corners are set exactly the same (ex: -10 horizontal, +10 vertical in each corner). There is a good chance that you can get convergence across most of the screen to be within 1/2 of a pixel, which is pretty good!

First, note that the default patterns the 5020 uses for pixel alignment are pretty poor; it is far easier to see the pixel structure when only primary colors are displayed. Therefore, start by burning the AVS HD 709 Bluray test disc which contains 2 useful patterns for convergence: a set of horizontal lines that alternate between R/G/B segments (to measure vertical alignment), and a set of vertical lines with the same pattern (to measure horizontal alignment).

Then do this:
  1. Let the 5020 warm up for 20 minutes
  2. Put the 5020 in Dynamic mode (makes it easier to see pixel structure) and turn off any detail enhancement, sharpening adjustments, and frame interpolation
  3. Bring up the AVS HD 709 horizontal line test pattern
  4. Using the center of the screen, assess whether R needs to move vertically by -1 or +1 pixel in order to line up with G
  5. Go through the 5020 panel alignment procedure and set R to -10 or +10 accordingly on all 4 corners (ignore the pattern displayed).
  6. Go back to the AVS pattern and confirm improvement.
  7. Repeat for B vertical.
  8. Switch to the AVS HD 709 vertical line test pattern and repeat the process for both R and B horizontal alignment.
  9. Check the AVS patterns one last time across the whole screen, hopefully you have good results at this point!

I hope this helps.

Anyone have a 5020 or 6020 variant they are willing to demo somewhere between Baltimore and DE?

Wish I could help, if you feel like coming by CA anytime soon smile.gif hit me up. Finally got my 5020 hooked up, and even without the screen set up yet; projecting onto my dark blue walls, the picture still looks great out of the box. Cant wait to get the screen set up. Will try to post picture this weekend

No sweat, I'll find one around here eventually.

Has anyone tested the input lag on this Projector? Word is that input lag is getting worse on the latest batch of PJ's so that way gaming is now noticeably affected.
Anyone?

I've had my eye on this PJ since its release, waiting for the first batch of price drops to hit but wanted to get the scoop on Input Lag first if possible, I don't know if this PJ has a "game" mode or "Processing Bypass" of some kind.

HeadRusch,

I tested it properly (crt), the results are in the official thread in the $3K+ forum.

The best it would do after trying multiple variations of settings was in the low 60's (which is actually improved from the previous 5010 that was in the 80-90 ms range).

Does anybody have any suggestions for ceiling mounts for the 5020UB that can accommodate a vaulted ceiling?
I was considering this one.

I finally fixed that problem by simply defaulting the "screen size" back to 60???? ghosting is gone and image is wonderful!.... but I ask why the avaiable adjustment? did I miss something.... well I guess once this thead gets going we are sure to find out.

Hello all,
I got my 5020UBe (TW-8100w) this morning and I'm really pleased so far!

However, I am getting a little bit of ghosting while watching 3D. Especially in subtitles (which my wife needs) and when things are way in the background, but still in focus.

As mentioned above, I set the screen size to default at 60 even though my screen is 80. It looked a little better that way. I also played around with my PS3 settings because you can choose 3D screen size there as well. So far, it looked better at 80 compared to the default of 72. I'll play around with that a little more tomorrow because you have to stop playback and exit out to the XMB to change settings... Very time consuming...

I also played with the 3D depth control, but found that 0 provided the best overall picture to my eyes.

By no means is the 3D bad, but I wonder if it can be improved?
Any advise on 3D settings?

Also, I'm really impressed on the color out of the box... The first page of this thread mentions calibrations, but does it make a huge difference? I never calibrated my previous PJ, but I'm curious...

Thanks!

Does everyone's picture start off greenish until the projector warms up or is it just mine that does it? It reminds me of a color TV from the '70's.

I would imagine that getting subtitles to remain in focus on a 3d image would be difficult. Calibration might not be a HUGE difference, but can be very noticeable, especially if the "out of the box" color is not very good. Most likely you'll lose a little brightness, just wait till around 200-300 hrs before getting one done. The 5020 has a very good THX mode, http://www.projectorreviews.com/epson/home-cinema-5020/calibration.php
