Onkyo NR809 vs. NR818... is Audyssey XT32 worth $100 with only one Subwoofer?

If I'm able to sell my Onkyo NR1007 AVR in the next few weeks, I'm looking into upgrading/downgrading/sidestepping to an NR809 or NR818. I know I'll be taking a step down in overall amplification. I've never used the DSX/PLIIz features or more than 5channels of amplification and likely won't in my current room. I've also recently had to downgrade my speakers to Sonance THX-LCR in-walls since we're in the process of converting my small theater into a more multipurpose family/play room. Since there will be 3 toddler and an infant making use of the space, the large Swans Diva 2.1/C3 speakers on stands had to go and have been replaced by the THX-LCR in-walls behind a 100" DIY acoustically transparent screen.

In the short term I'm hoping to trade some of the amplification heft of the NR1007 for some newer features like HDMI 1.4 for 3D (just moved to a 3D capable projector, currently using SBS for 3D through the NR1007) as well as possibly Audyssey XT32 for room correction. In the long term (a future larger dedicated HT) the AVR would likely be augmented by an Emotiva XPA-3 or XPA-5 as well as a fairly big speaker upgrade.

My current subwoofer is an Ascendant Avalanche 12" (XBL^2) with Bash 500w amp in a 6.5 ft^3 enclosure tuned to ~18hz. The placement, however, is a bit compromised in a window nook/dormer behind the primary seating position. The Audyssey MultEQ XT in the NR1007 has done an admirable job of smoothing out the sub response so far, but I wonder if XT32 could do better given the fact that I only have one subwoofer?

Are there any other majorly notable feature differences between the NR809 and NR818?

I missed the $430 Amazon deal for the NR809, so I'm looking at around a $100 difference between the NR809 and NR818. Had Onkyo upgraded the NR717 to XT32 instead of downgrading it to 2EQ it would also be on my radar given the eventual use as a pre-pro. The NR709 would be around $100 less than the NR809, but I would only really consider the NR709 at a far lower price-point (maybe used?) since it will still be the only source of amplification in the short/mid-term (at least a year, probably 2).

Thanks in advance! Also, PM me if you're looking for an NR1007 in excellent condition wink.gif

Pay whatever you can to get XT32. I'll never buy another processor or receiver without it, again. And I thought regular XT was terrible. smile.gif

I agree with Sam...but it depends on your room. Is there anyway you can buy both and test it? Or try the 809 and if you dont love it..then return and get the 818. For me...I have the 818 on order and its headed my way.

@ Stephen Hopkins -

Keep in mind that the feature that is used to EQ dual subwoofers is Sub EQ HT (not XT32). All current models featuring XT32 (except the 818) also feature Sub EQ HT which is why a discussion of XT32 may also reference using dual subs.

Definitely go XT32!

Right now the 809 is $599 on amazon, and the 818 is $949.
Is the XT32 worth $350?

If you can wait, the new 2013 models should be released soon, so prices are likely to come down some more. smile.gif

It was released last spring/summer 2012 along with the 313, 414, 515, 616, and 717.

It's a moot point for me (for now at least) as I picked up a NR905 for a screaming deal. That said, what is the consensus on the benefit of XT32 vs. XT specifically in the LFE region and particularly with a single sub (understanding that dual-sub EQ isn't an XT32 feature). Thanks again!

XT32 is HUGE in the bass region...huge. Now if you have two subs you need Sub EQ but one of the biggest reason for getting XT 32 is hard to integrate subwoofer. You want your whole system to sound 100% integrated.

I have 6 ohm rear speakers and 4 ohm front speakers with a large subwoofer crossed in front at 60 hz and in back at 80 hz. This would sound bad...if not for room correction. Especially given my room.

Now...too many things depend on if you need XT or XT 32. Given the different parts of my system + room ...XT 32 makes a very big difference compared to XT.

YMMV.
