500W, ~45L, sealed, music use... GO!!!

So, you've got:
  • 500W RMS plate amp
  • ~45L net (~16" external cube) size sealed enclosure
  • Plenty of polyfill for "heavy" fill

Target use is for music with a preference for a "low" Q config.

What driver do you use?

From my searching the TC Sounds Epic 12 & 15" Dayton HO seem like good candidates. What else?

The RS12HF will work well in that box with 500 watts

500W looks like too much power unless you have something like a 23Hz HPF. The Q is a little high also.

My winisd model showed it stays under xmax with 500 watts, f3 40Hz. Your plate amp doesn't have a hpf?

Sure it does, but why give up low end output by putting it at 23Hz if I don't have to?

I sure don't see it staying under 14.3mm with 500W with no HPF. confused.gif

For some reason I had my box volume at 34l, my bad. Even still you're showing way more cone excursion then I'm getting



What amp do you have? any kind of hpf would have excursion less then 1mm over xmax.

Looks fine to me. How often is this guy going to be seeing a full 500w? Drop down 1-2dB and you're well under 'rated' Xmax. I'd go.

Got me... My graph looks like that if I drop the fill and only use 400W.

It's the Yung 500W. I plan to mod it to change the HPF to single digits and completely bypass their boost circuit.

The Q is a little high. Some of the other options have a little better response curves IMHO. See the graph below.

Even if we overlook that there doesn't seem to be enough excursion to take the full 500W and graph its response exceeding xmax, it doesn't seem like there's an argument for it over some of the other driver options (which can take the full 500W) that are in the same general ballpark on cost.

So, are we out of driver suggestions?

We've got 4 drivers that perform pretty much identically (with 1dB) from 10Hz to 40Hz in a 45L box with 500W (assuming the Dayton 12" HF has more than the rated xmax). Above 40Hz some differences appear.

No one is going to suggest two of the 12" Dayton RSS315HO-44 drivers? tongue.gif

Are you completely sold on sealed? I'm still not sure exactly what your goal is with this sub, but I just checked out the 10" dayton ultimax in 45l with a CSS APR15 +900g mass. You end up with a box that's flat to 23hz and handles the 500 watts no problems

I'm not 100% sold on sealed. I am pretty much sold on 45L or really close to it.

So, I've added the SI HT 15" D2 to the mix and Jay's 10" Ultimax + 15" APR PR config.

All you need is a HPF below the tuning point like any bass reflex design. Nothing about that decreases "musicality" so I dont see what the problem is.

Sterodude, you should throw a LPF on all of those subs

Well it will in the box. In terms of the graphs from Unibox it's not that hard to ignore the portion above 100-125Hz. Adding a HPF and the LPF for Unibox isn't trivial since it only supports one .frd file and they're a pain in the butt to synthesize.

I think I will probably go with the 15" Dayton HO, but I may wait for it to go on sale. If I go with the SI HT 15" D2 I will find myself with an uncontrollable desire to get a more powerful amp instead of the 500W Yung since the driver is loafing along with only 500W.

It looks like after considering the displacement of the bracing, driver, and amp I need to make a 16.75" cube (exterior dimensions). The box will be Baltic Birch.
