Considering buying a used remote

I am thinking of buying a universal remote like the pronto pro TSU7000. I know its discontinued but is there any other downside to buying one of these?

I have read some threads on here mostly older which describe it as being fairly easy to program via some online resources etc. however i am a little concerned with one post i read that indicated the programming software is not compatible with Win7 and some of the newer operating systems. Is that still true?

Is there some alternative remote that is similar in shape/format to the old pronto which could be had for less than $100?

I was looking for the same thing but I decided to go the iRule route and get a global cache ip to ir device. You can get one on ebay for $30 and the app is $50.

The flexibility is great if it works with your setup.
