denon 2801 wont pass optical in to rec out

I have an old old denon 2801 that Im trying to find some use for. I want to plug wireless headphones into it and use it to switch audio on a secondary TV. I can get the optical connection to come out the pre outs, but the pre outs are only center, surround and front so I dont get the whole audio all at once.

I tried plugging the headphones into rec out and setting rec out properly but nothing comes out. I read something that indicated that digital sources cant come out rec out. But is that only as digital? Shouldnt they be converted to analog by the AMP?

I only need regular stereo, can the amp do a stereo conversion from digital to rec out (or even to the pre outs so the entire signal comes out)?

Alternately will the headphone jack have the right signal? I dont want to buy the very rare 1/4 headphone to RCA female connector if the headphone also wont pass the audio

Any other solutions?

The wireless headset base has two male RCA jacks.

unfortunately the source is either the TV or the PS3, either way the connections are only optical out. But as long as the headphone jack will work Im ok with that.
