Split R38 insulation into thinner pieces to get R19

I know this is going to make me sound cheap, but hey, I AM! Has anyone ever took some extremely thick insulation, like R38 ish (12" thick), and torn it into thinner pieces, like R19 thickness? Menards has some thick insulation on sale, and if I could manage to split it up, it would save me a lot. It seems like it should be fairly easy to tear it, since it is basically layered along that direction anyway. I'm going to be loosely stuffing it in my ceiling for sound absorption.

That should work, you're just going to need to REALLY cover up as it will get REALLY itchy tearing it instead of cutting it.

I'd also wear a face mask.

That's good advice. That stuff can be nasty, I know.

Is about R19 thickness what's recommended for sound absorption in ceilings? Or would R11 work just as well?

I did that to split r13 into thinner sheets to use in lining speaker cabinets, it does tear away fairly easily.

Fantastic, thanks, I was hoping I'd find someone who's actually done it before!

I've ripped insulation to make it thinner and lived to talk about, but I do have a persistent cough.
