Miller's Crossing aspect ratio?

I'm watching Miller's Crossing on Netflix streaming HD and my image size is ~16.5" x 11.5" on my 24" monitor = 1.43:1 - i.e., neither 1.33:1 nor 1.66:1 nor 1.78/1.85:1. Reviews of the DVD and BD say 1.85:1. Am I watching a larger image open matte presentation or a pan-and-scan (which I would expect to be 1.33:1)?

IMDB lists it at 1.85

So does most every place. So is Netflix showing an open matte or a pan-and-scan? I guess the way to tell is to find some screen shots for the DVD or BD and locate the same scene in the Netflix streaming version.

I was looking at those same screencaps as you wrote this post, Josh. The Netflix version is definitely open matte - much more top and bottom information, but same info on the sides.

Interestingly, my PS3 displays it as 1.43:1, but watching it on Netflix via Firefox displays it as ~1.33:1, and a screen freeze comparison shows that Firefox indeed displays just a little more top and bottom information than the PS3 fullscreen view.

Thanks for reminding me why I don't subscribe to NetFlix.

Hey, be nice. Netflix is streaming Miller's Crossing in HD, with optional subtitles, too, and if you want 1.85:1, you can simply mask off the top and bottom inches of your TV or monitor. That's better than Netflix panning and scanning it. biggrin.gif

I came to this thread via a google search, as I had the same question when I started the movie on Netflix.

For those of us that have Amazon Prime --- Miller's Crossing is in the correct aspect ratio, and HD. Not sure what NF is thinking with that one.
