I want CRISP Center speaker sound HELP!

I currently have a Denon 589 receiver and the center channel sound is always muddy and dull. I have to turn the gain up to +7 just to hear the dialog correctly . I have tried other center channels but I think it's my receiver .

Can you recommend a good low range $300 max receiver that will give me the clear crisp center channel sound I am after? I use my receiver only for home theater 5.1 sound. I have Boston Speakers and a good sub.

What speaker are you using? Is it at least as good a quality as the FL/FR speakers if not better? Is it pulled to the edge of the shelf (if placed on a cabinet shelf) and aimed up towards the ear height of the main listening position? What was the volume trim after running Audyssey? Is the issue with all sources or just TV? Do you use Audyssey Dyn EQ?

RS 244C Center Channel.

Pulled to the edge and in line with our heads.

Audyssey doesn't seem to help much.

All sources.

I do use the Dyn EQ. I wish I could turn up the Treble on the center channel. It's muddy.

The 589 doesn't feature the Reference Level Offset setting provided on the XX10/X90 and newer models. Try adjusting the Source Level setting for those sources with the problem by -10db which will then require you to raise the master volume 10db to get to the same volume level you're accustomed to using, thus reducing the bass/surround boost resulting in more inteligible center channel dialogue. Note also that by setting Dyn EQ to OFF, you can adjust the overall Treble using the Tone Control setting (p. 31 OM).
