Help with custom patterns - Photoshop!

Hi all

In the process of making some new patterns which i'll be happy to share once Ive managed to overcome a few obstacles!
Ive been using Photoshop CS3 and have created numerous patterns already but need confirmation that im following the right process!
Selecting a new file ive selected a size of 1920 x 1080 pixels, RGB colour and 8 bit, CIE RGB selected at Colour profile and pixel aspect ratio set to square pixels.

Is this right? After making the relevant sized window (ive chose 5%, 6.5%, 12% and 18%) i then save them as targa file, 24 bit - this seems to work just fine, however Im having trouble proceeding past this point as I seem to be unable to convert to YUV.

Ive tried to follow alluringreality's 'guide' in the AVSHD thread but just cannot seem to proceed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Both the AVSHD709 and GCD disk use my RGB to YCbCr utility.

Typical usage (in a command prompt window) is:

rgbtouyvy 1920 1080 pattern.tga pattern.yuv

The program expects video levels (16 to 235) in the RGB file.

Tried the utility, just flashes up for a milisecond then disappears????

Ok got it to work - any ideas how I can convert this to a .avs file?

Something like this should work as your .avs file. 60 frames would be 2 seconds (actually 2.002 seconds).
Code:
c1 = Rawsource("pattern.yuv", 1920, 1080, "UYVY")
c2 = Loop(c1, 60)
AssumeFPS(c2, 29.97)

Thanks Ron, although this is the part where I'm scratching my head!
I'm not quite sure what I'm meant to do with the info you've just posted!
Is there a utility to do this automatically where I input the file name 'pattern.yuv' and an output file as 'pattern.avs'?

Perhaps I've got this entirely wrong and completely misunderstanding this part!

Any walk through for this would be highly appreciated!

Also, did I set my file settings correct in CS3?

Hi Neil,

the .avs file is some kind of script for MeGUI needed for encoding the image (YUV) to video. You have the option to output as single video file or You can combine a couple of images to one video.

For single files you need to have an .avs file for each image.

download the "example.zip" which includes an .avs file You just have to modify according to Your files names and directory were files are stored.

For combining You have to create an .avs files as described here:

for both You should download the "attach.zip" as it includes the settings for MeGUI.

I used the same Photoshop settings, 8bit RGB should be right.

Thanks Dr Faxe - unforunately even though Im amending the .avs file to reflect the location of the .yuv file, I get an error saying 'Avisynth Script error, cannot open video file'.

Any ideas?

got the same error first. Try directory and files names with max 8 characters (like old MS-DOS) and without space characters.

did you copy following files (unziped) in the plugins directory of avisynth?
rawsource_25_dll_20060728.zip 71k .zip file

the AVSHD disc was authored with Adobe Encore. MultiAVCHD is also an option as it is free, but looks very confusing to me. As my Oppo plays all media files well, I didn't try authoring and use the mkv files. As You go for BD you hopefully noticed that rawavc as output file in MeGUI and than remux to m2ts is required.
And You should use a software which doesn't do any reencoding of the video files as both mentioned versions should do.

Not all players function exactly the same with DVD media, so the easiest thing is to know what your player will play and create something similar.

If you are burning AVCHD or HDMV (Blu-ray) files to disc yourself, I suggest using ImgBurn, since it will ask if you want to add the required UDF 2.5 or 2.6 formatting.

tsmuxer can create AVCHD files without a menu. It includes a few extra folders that I removed from the AVS HD 709 AVCHD. If your player happens to play our AVCHD disc and doesn't play a tsmuxer disc, then just remove the extra folders and burn again.

A newer free program called EasyBD Lite can apparently create HDMV (Blu-ray) files without a menu, but I haven't tried it.

I think MultiAVCHD can create either AVCHD or HDMV with menus, and it can also add AVCHD information to HDMV. Again if you happen to have a player that requires AVCHD, there may be a few Samsung players that might require the extra AVCHD folders to be removed.

After that there are semi-professional options like Encore or Sony, but the older versions only created HDMV (Blu-ray).

If none of this helps, compress your files with 7-zip to .7z and put in a .zip file to post.

Ok, ive git it to work, the only problem I have now is that each 'clip' isnt an individual chapter when playing via my Denon 2500BT. Instead all the patters are played via 9 chapters????
Ive attached the fulldisk.avs file - can anyone tell me where exaclty im going wrong in this script?

Appreciate you help,

This is great ndaa,thanks for doing this...

I'am like you chasing my tail trying to find that magic pattern for calibrating my GT30...

Edit...Would not load on imgburn.

Ndaa could you please do it in avchd/mp4 format for those of us without a blu-ray burner...Thanks

Yep, give me a bit of time - so far i managed to do 4.5% windows specifically for a Panasonic - ive included 0% windows in between each title to 'wash' the sreen.
I do have a bit of a problem tho, that is as I dont have encore I cannot create a DVD with menus - as soon as the disk is inserted into the BD player it starts.
Anyways, now I managed to get to grips with the process I can easily create any custom patterns - just may need someone to place them on menu based disk.

Any takers?

Attached are 4% windowed 75% Lumiance CMS patterns ive converted to MP4.
Before I continue to encode the remainder of the patterns (Grayscale, Saturation) could someone with a metre to hand please check the MP4 files are correct, perhaps compare to AVS or GCD files.
Once confirmed i'll continue on in all formats and various window types.

Heres a complete range of 4% windows, 75 lum CMS windows, 0-100 lum in 10% steps for Grayscale and 25,50,75 and 100 saturation patterns for all primary and secondary colours - as I havent got encore I havent been able to create an interactive disk.(MultiAVCHD can do it but i cant figure it out!!)
Therefore the attached needs to be extracted and burned to disk using ImgBurn.
Once ImgBurn is open select mode, then build, then goto the options tab, ensure file system is UDF and the UDF revision is 2.5.
Drag the extracted BDMV and CERTIFICATE files into the large empty window on the left (second window below where it says 'source'.)
Put an empty DVD in and record!

Grayscale.zip 172k .zip file
75 Lum CMS.zip 135k .zip file
Saturation.zip 399k .zip file

The files have been compressed using 7zip, which you'll need to install to extract the BDVM and CERTIFICATE file.

Have you calibrated your VT30 yet with your new windows?

Is 4% the right size for your tv because I thought 6.5% was the size or was 4% the size you measured from the ramp test?

I was going to have a go last night - but didnt.

I did 4% initially as I had heard from a few people trying to calibrate their VT30 and VT50's that this size worked well.
I'll be including a measured size when I have a chance to (bit difficult at the moment!) but these are kind of unique to display type, screen size and individual settings so not sure how useful these could be.
I havent yet tried these windows as ive been so busy with work and family, perhaps you could give them a go.
One thing I havnte done is issue a manual for each disk, since there are no indications what pattern youre using by chapter.
I'll be doing this shortly.

Heres the guide for all 3 disks

4% Windows chapter guide disk 1,2 and 3.zip 7k .zip file

Ive included a 0% white on all disks - for Panasonics, I usually select this pattern inbetween readings to wash the screen.
Each pattern lasts 30 seconds.
