Give us the largest dimension you can fit behind the screen. Another option is the Tuba HT LP, build two of them.

I would recommend going with at least dual subs. I have an Hsu VTf-15H and am replacing it with four sealed 15" subs in 3.8 cu ft boxes. It is going to cost me right around $1k for all four. I purchased four 15" Dayton DVC 385-88 drivers when they were $99 each and an iNuke3000dsp to power them.

You need decide how big a box you can build if you go ported, and you may want to download Winisd Pro and model some subs.

If I were in your shoes, I would order either 2 Dayton HO18's or 2 Stereo Integrity 18D's, build them in a ported enclosure powered by a single Behringer EP4000. Each Dayton HO18 is $250 so two would come to a total of $500, and in an EP4000 for a tad under $300 and there you will most likely have a hell of a performer! I would bet my life that two of those would most definitely best a single HSU VTF-15.

Don't you need some sort of HPF? But yeah, I agree this would be a lot of bang for the buck. That said, by the time you buy wood, and everything else you need you are probably close to $900-1000.

Another option within budget. Two Dayton 15's in ported boxes. Behringer iNuke3000dsp amp. That amp has a 20hz. High pass filter.

I cant compare to the HSU but i've just built these: (2) 3,6 cu ft Ported with RSS315 HO 44, powered by a SA1000 Amp,.. and they sound awesome in my 22x23 x8 room, Amp is not even at 3/10

LoL seems like this answer is becoming the best answer.

If you have the HSU 15, want something that compares to the HSU 15, and is similar dimensions to the HSU 15, why not just use the HSU 15 ? The reason for DIY subs is either you can build them CHEAP, or you can build a enclosure design that allows for a very efficient sub that a normal vendor wouldn't be able to offer due to shipping size or complexity.

HSU knows how to build a good sub within their design dimensions. You probably won't be able to build something the same size and have it be worlds better. What you could do is build something similar for much cheaper, and build 2 or 4 of them.

Inuke 3000dsp = $300 at amazon

That leaves $260 for cabinets etc.

How is that not better than a HSU 15?

The HSU is 25 x 18 x 26. Likely a little under 5 ft3 internal. Would a 26 x 21 x 26 box be close enough to the HSU? With a pair of 4" x 25" ports and after the likely bracing you would be right about 6 ft3 with a 20 hz tune (the HSU is 22hz with both ports). A multitude of 15" woofers would work very well in this enclosure.

The NU3000dsp would be your best value, but if you want to keep things super simple you can pick up a pair of 500 watt plate amps for $400

The DVC 15" Dayton's are a great value, but you could also go with the RS390HO, or any number of other 15"s

In order to get the long ports to fit inside the cabinet, you would use 4" pvc pipes for the ports, and these elbow fittings
