Onkyo HT-RC460 owners chime in on what you think of the new receiver purchse you made please. - Page 2

Receiver was delivered on Monday. An entire evening was spent trying to do the firmware update, but there is no option to update it. I wondered if we got one that had been updated & returned but the box looked like it had never been opened. So, Tuesday we started setup. Things seemed great until we came home Wednesday to find it froze up & had to be unplugged & plugged back in to get working again. Same thing happened Thursday & Friday. I'm wondering if anyone else was unable to update firmware, or had unit freeze up.

I just bought an HT-RC460 on Friday and updated the firmware last night. Go to this link:

http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=HT-RC460&class=Receiver&p=d

Select the Firmware Update USB Download option near the bottom of the page.

For this latest firmware, you will need to load the firmware via a USB drive. Download the file, then when you open it, it will create a folder (with 4 files in it) as well as 3 additional files. These all need to be copied to the USB drive at the root directory. Also, they say that those are the only files to be on the USB drive. There is a YouTube video explaining the update procedure.

This morning, I powered up the unit and did not have the HDMI issues, but will have to wait a few days to see if it reoccurs (it didn't always exhibit the problem before).

Depends on the error message. You go to "set up", and click "firmware". Plug in your USB, click "USB" and it should take care of itself.

It's won't handle the unzipped files.

It's on page EN 79 - 82

There is a message that tells you your firmware is current, but I can't find it.

I have the rc 460. And it is set up for 7.1. When I play a 7.1 blueray and I hit info it says 7.1 input and 7.1 output. No problem. But when I play a DVD that is 5.1. It says 5.1 input and 5.1 output.
I thought if you have it set up got 7.1. And you play a 5.1 source it matrex it up to 7.1???
Anyone know?

Well, I tried 3 different thumbdrives, with the individual files ONLY, and the damn thing still reported "no items". Kinda strange... If I go to the 'Firmware Update' selection on the setup menu, it shows my firmware version as 1130-9107-0300. I'm also hooked into my network and the manual indicates that it should offer an update if there is one available.

Format the thumbdrive as FAT32, then load the files to the thumb drive. If that doesnt work format it as FAT and try again.

I've got my RC460 from BB, so far really enjoying it except!!.. well when I connect my PC at 720p 120hz, nothing will display on main out, but funny thing is it works fine on Sub out,
so decided to call the tech support. first thing they said was my cable of 25ft was too long, either get signal booster or use shorter cable. so orderd signal booster, and. still doing same thing. so I decided to unhook my projector use 5ft cable and, it still does the same thing. shame on the support. so calling back the support now am bit upset.... (subout works fine and it's most cases fine with me except that you don't get onscreen menu and going through menu on unit is a pain.

I have an Acer Nettop PC connected to my Samsung flatpanel thru the RC460 via HDMI with no problems. The Acer is outputting full HD (1920 x 1080). I don't recall doing anything special on the receiver set-up. Won't your PC output 1920 x 1080?

Since they are (more than likely) using different processors that's not all surprising. It appears the resolution isn't supported via the main out (processor).

well called support, they asked me to change the main out resolution to 720p to see if it will work, come to find out, my receiver with the Firmware update it will not change output display mode anything less than 1080p so even if I set Main out to 480 or 720p it will always be 1080p or higher that you set. not sure if anyone could test on there receiver to see if they are getting same result, support basically told me my unit might be defective and get it replaced.

if anyone could try, try changing main out resolution to 720p, than click display button two/three times and see what comes up it should be something like 1080p input -> 720p if it stays at 1080p -> 1080p than having same issue as I am. main issue with this is that I've bought this receiver for 3D, and can't get 3D from PC unless it connects through 120hz problem is my projector only support 3d at 720p 120hz, so have to set my receiver to output 720 p not upconvert to 1080p 60 as what this is trying to do but doesn't work as display shows 720p 120hz -> 1080p 60hz

Have you referenced page 85 of the manual? It states you can't display 1080p as 720p.

Ah thanks for the info, never checked that portion of manual, guess can't really test it for those unless one of you are using 720p.

I just purchased HTC-460, checked firmware and said ........100? I downloaded latest firmware and did upgrade without any problems, however when I checked the latest version it stated ......300??? The latest should be ....400. I checked the date of the files that I downloaded and they were June 14? I downloaded the files and extracted once again and same date (three files 1 of ... to 3 and folder) all had same date Jun 14. I must be getting the old firmware update, shouldn't the dates be October dates?

hmm 3 files had Jun 14 but 4 files in sub folders has date of 9/24
post #45 of 68
I thought there was only supposed to be 3 files plus folder?
The thumdrive, after extracting the zip file did have a folder (containing 4 files) and 3 files dated June 2012. I did the firmware update a second time and it worked I am now with the correct version. (.....400)

The internals Is the same one as onkyo but you get a lot more range with the TP-link, and you can also upgrade the antenna to a bigger one to get even more range. Remember This is plug and play no installation required. I have it and its working flawlessly.

I'm trying to settup my wireless connection, always seem to have difficulty with this. I picked up the TP=Link TL=WN822n (didnt have ythe 722n), same setup I believe. I set it up via the computer first then plug into my HT=RC460 and no luck could not connect? When you say plug and play, you did not setup first with CD via computer?? Maybe I am missing proceedure in Internet connection at setup with receiver?? I have a email sent to TP-Link Tech Support.

Further enquiries describe that you plug in the USB wireless adapter and enter USB input and the wireless connection screen will appear. This maybe for the the Onkyo Wireless dongle I don't know, but my TL=Link ( and my panasonic wireless dongle that I tried) just showed "no storage available" I couldn't get any further?

Hurk

Advised by TL-Link customer support that their products will not work on Onkyo Receivers, they do not have TL-Link drivers and will not recognized the adapter. I will have to use the Onkyo Wireless dongle.

Hurk

Picked up the Onkyo Wireless adapter, worked like a charm.

It doesn't work for you because you got the wrong one. the one that is compatible with onkyo is the 722 not the 822. Last time i checked newegg still had them. And yes plug and play means just plug it in to the receiver and it works. TRUST ME!

Has anyone figured out how to use Zone 2? Their manual seems to skim over a few things...

The reason is that I have a pair of Sony headphones with RCA plugs I'd like to hook up through the back rather than use and adapter for the 1/4" plug in front.

I was hoping Zone 2 would allow me to do that, but I can't seem to get it to work.
Well, the headphone jack isn't for Zone 2 anyway, its for the main zone. Why is it preferred to use your headphones with rca cables? What Sony headphones are they?

Zone 2 sources must be connected with analog cables (red/white rca cables). HDMI and digital inputs dont work in zone 2. Zone 2 allows you to play the same or a difference source from the main zone in another area.
take a look at page 50 of the manual to 'turn on' Zone 2 power. Zone 2 sources cannot be from HDMI or digital inputs but they can be the tuners and even the Net Apps like Pandora!
Regarding my Zone 2 problem...

My head phones are old wireless Sony TMR RF960R

I plugged the RCA cables into Zone 2 plugs in back.
In set up I turned Zone 2 on
I followed the instructions to turn on Zone 2 - on the receiver it says in tiny letters Zone 2... I selected my standard cable TV as input to test for sound.

Nothing.

I know I must be doing something wrong...

And just for neatness and simplicity, I don't want to use the front headphone plug.

EDIT: Well, I figured it out. The Zone 2 outputs will not do digital, so if you have HDMI connections, all you can output to Zone 2 is AM/FM.
How stupid. My apologies to the box of rocks I insulted during my "Eureka" moment... I presume the front output will. I just don't want plugs hanging out the front of my receiver like I'm in a studio or something...

I just picked up the rc 460'and setting it up, i saw that everyone is mentioning the firmware update, when i went to the posted link for the ubs update it shows that the most recent update was in 2012. Is it safe to assume that the one i got in feb 13 is updated and i dont need to go through the hassle if its already up to date? Thank you

Got ours in January & it still needed to be updated. They were probably boxed up before the updates became available

I bought this receiver the other day. What a remarkable difference from my old Pioneer which I was never proud of (came in a package setup). I can finally hear my surrounds, and it's great! Voices from the television aren't screamingly loud as with the old Pioneer and the Onkyo, while projecting the voices "normally," can blast the room with explosions. I'm very pleased so far, and I'm using old bookshelf Pioneer speakers and a passive subwoofer...for now.

As I said, I bought this the other day and have been having trouble with the firmware update...what a headache. One forum led me here yesterday, and oddly enough, it was from this thread that I decided not to upgrade. This morning another read through the thread gave me the guts to try again. I say this because I've been concerned that I'd mess up the system. So, for the firmware upgrade, which I was able to successfully install, I did the following: First I emptied a thumbdrive and formatted it to FAT32 (full format, not the quick format). On my desktop, I extracted the zip file containing the upgrade. I put the unzipped contents (do not include the zip file) consisting of 1 folder (containing 4 files) and 3 files, for a total of 7 files (leave the folder with the 4 files intact). When you open your thumbdrive, the root should show 1 folder and 3 files (just want to make it clear, I had major headaches with this). Eject your thumbdrive from the computer and plug it into the front of the receiver, and turn the receiver on (does not need internet connection, mine was not plugged into ethernet or wireless). On the remote, press usb button (Remote Mode/Input Selector section) until you see USB(F) on the receiver. The receiver will begin initializing/reading the drive. Once the initial initialization is complete, on the remote, select receiver button followed by home. Go over to Firmware Update and press enter. Voila, it should now give you the option of updating. The process takes about an hour, and when you see "Completed!" on the receiver, turn it off and back on, and you're done.

I also ordered the tp-link wireless lan usb mentioned in this thread from newegg, as well as some polk monitors and a powered sub.

It's performance, and I'm not a pro, rekindled my interest in home theater and ushered in the desire for new speakers.

So far, so good. I hope I've been able to help someone, and thanks for all your prior posts.

I just got an HT-RC460, and updated the firmware via USB with no issues. I was using a TX-SR608, but the sole HDMI OUT port got mangled by a HEAVY HDMI cable.

I must be dense, but I have some questions regarding the use of the two HDMI ports.

I have a Mistubishi 1080p projector in my Theater. The Receiver, Blu Ray player, HTPC, etc. are also physically located the the Theater.

I want to feed ONE HDMI output to the projector (main, and the other HDMI output (sub) to a HD TV located in the room ABOVE the theater. I will always use either the TV OR the Projector, ever both at the same time.

If I set MONITOR OUT to BOTH will that work? Will that setting deliver dual 1080p output to both the projector AND the TV? I can physically control all devices located in EITHER room FROM either room.

Thanks,

David

Basically, yes. Page 83 (of the manual) explains all of the gory details. Such as the AVR menu are is only available on the MAIN output and the resolution (to both) will be the highest supported by either display.

Thanks, Charles R!

I set it to BOTH and now at least I have VIDEO on both the projector and the TC.

Alas, as yet I have no sound making it to the TV, but the projector/receiver/7.1 speakers are doing as expected.

I may need to feed a red/white RCA audio cable from the receiver OUT to the TV in?

Anyway, so far I'm happy with this receiver...

About a week went by after we updated firmware until we had an HDMI failure. Did the unplug & wait 5 minutes trick & haven't had a problem since, and it's been a couple of weeks. The only glitch I have is I can't see the playlists on my mp3 player in the Onkyo app. The music shows up in all categories except for playlists, which is what I'd most like to play. They do show up in the app on my tablet, but my most up to date playlists would be on the mp3 player. Other than that everything else is working great now and the receiver does much more than expected.
Please help, i purchased the receiver and set everything up, i have no problem getting audio but i cannot get video to play on my projector, i have one hdmi going to benq projector and when it is connected directly to the source (playstation, apple tv etc) there is video and audio but when i connect those sources to the receivers (htrc 460)hdmi in ports and connect hdmi out from the reciever to the projector i get no video to display, am i doing something wrong? Do i need to do some update etc? Having this receiver and not getting video feed to the projector totally defeats the purpose why i have a receiver.
Thanks in advance
