Where did you find artwork and info? Amazon has little info on this title.

hehehe...

Well that's certainly not by looking at that awful artwork that we're going to recognize the splendid Mathilda...

Hopefully the transfer will be different than the drastically different color timed and very black crushed HD broadcast that's been making the rounds on the MGMHD channel the last year or two. There's some scenes especially when the shuttle is visiting the alien space ship that are tinted so strongly green, you think they're visiting Oz by way of The Matrix.

Many fond memories of this cult classic movie - aside of the perky peaks of Ms. May, highlights include a then-virtually unknown Patrick Stewart nearly gets a big smooch from a male co-star, lol!

Favorite part of the film was the opening sequences with the discovery of the alien ship near the comet, and where the crew explore the interior of the alien craft. Wouldn't mind seeing this remade....now, who should play Mathilda (?) rolleyes.gif And for a minute, I thought this was directed by the same Brit that directed the latest 'Les Miserables', and 'The King's Speech' -- but this was Tobe, and not Tom Hooper tongue.gif

Oh, according to Shout Factory, the BD comes out on April 30th biggrin.gif

I'm totally geeked about this title! I've been a fan since the beginning. This is one of those films that "has to be seen to be believed!". I predict this release will move the film into a whole new level of cult status.

Expect the same transfer. They certainly won't do another one.

The little I have seen of past Shout BDs did not impress me much pq wise, still hope springs eternal.

Agreed. The master -- which Hooper approved himself (on another board, someone who works at MGM HD said as much) -- is out there and has been airing on MGM HD for a while now. It looks really good, and should look even better in Shout's release (at least the longer version).

I never realized she was a brunette...tongue.gif

This is the 80's nostalgia stuff that always cracks me up and will proudly be displayed in my ht. Dan O'bannon screenplay as well.

Hmm. I want to say MGM HD has been airing the theatrical cut, though I'm not certain of it...that said, I'm in. This really was a "kitchen sink" kind of movie. smile.gif
post #19 of 95
It was absolutely the extended cut.

The MGM-HD airing is so superior to the old non-anamorphic DVD, jaws will drop. Is it perfect? No, but then again, compressed cable cannot be.

I sent Shout a letter begging them not to DNR it.

A movie that could have been a spectacular sci-fi/horror with the right scriptwriter and director at the helm. Other than a very beautifully naked Ms. May (damn, what a bod!!!!) to make it memorable, it's a really silly B monster movie with perfectly shaped boobs and a Patrick Stewart cameo (at least he finally got to be in a movie where a girl's clothes fall off... ala Extras!) biggrin.gif

The caps in the The Duellists from Shout look better then I expected, still would need to see more but more hopeful then before:

@Dan Hitchman, yeah that's why few if any gush over Showgirls, lack of nudity.

Well, consider the source biggrin.gif

Seriously, I recall really ugly film stock. BD will give us sharp ugly. But with a great Henry Mancini score (?!!?)

it's a really silly B monster movie

You say that like it's a bad thing. That's the point. Think Plan 9 From Outer Space with a ginormous budget. Badness on a biblical scale. Dogs and cats living together. Yeah.

The release date got pushed back to June 18...according to Shout Factory's product page

Some unforeseen production challenges required us to need more time than originally planned in order to create the kind of worthy bonus content you've come to expect on our Collector's Editions. We did not want to compromise our standards on this (much-loved) film and so we hope that you understand why we needed to move it. We're confident the end-result will be worth the wait.

Here it is:

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Lifeforce-Blu-ray/44295/#Review

The caps are kinda of up and down, a few very nice and others mediocre, detail is ok to weak in the images and there are some odd looking artifacts in the film grain maybe the jpg compression but I suspect not.

That looks pretty much like the MGM HD channel broadcast. As I mentioned above a while back, I'm not a big fan of the much more saturated color timing that apparently Hooper himself supervised and OK'd, but as long as the movie isn't overly black crushed like the HD broadcast, I can live with it. It's interesting that there's apparently 2 complete versions of the Blu-ray, the "International" uncut version and the US theatrical release. I wonder why they just didn't seemlessly branch the two versions.... The downside is the US version has only DD 5.1 audio.

If this movie had been first released in a prior decade, I am pretty sure it would have been titled "Nude Space Vampires."tongue.gif That name would have also likely helped the movie at the box office.

I think 'Mathilda May Naked' is the best title possible. And the best reason to watch the film.

Watched the Blu-ray tonight. It's not gonna win any top tier film/video quality awards but it looks much better than I was expecting and the screen caps seem to indicate. The color timing is a bit oversaturated in places (notably in the opening space sequence) and it is the same transfer that has shown up on (I believe) the MGMHD channel the last year or so, but it's not nearly as compressed or black crushed. There are some pretty grainy, perhaps digital artifact-ridden scenes here and there, but I think it's more to do with particular film stocks used on certain scenes than any issues porting it to Blu-ray. Overall, it's by far the best home video presentation this movie has ever received and watching it straight through, I was pleasantly reminded how entertaining the film is on a purely guilty pleasure level.

My one minor complaint is the menu doesn't give you an obvious option to watch either the "extended" Euro cut or the US theatrical version. The menu just says "Play" which takes you to the International version and in the extras menu you can only select "Play Theatrical Cut."

Considering the selections Shout/Scream Factory's have licenced for release the past year or so and the fact they are at least very good to excellent quality transfers, they certainly have become my favorite cult studio these days. I am now ready to pull the trigger on The Howling, They Live and Funhouse.

Oh come now did you really want to watch the theatrical cut. biggrin.gif Seriously though, my copy should be here in the next day or two and I'll be happy to have the film wide screen and high def. Speaking of Shout/ Scream factory, pre-orders are also up for Prince of Darkness to be released in October. I ordered a copy.

Prince of Darkness???????? I'm all over that one! Crossing fingers for a good HD transfer. It is one of John Carpenter's best among the obvious list of titles.
