Newbie - rec for receiver, speakers and sub after purchasing and returning Bose Cinemate ii

Hello all. Just joined the site after doing some research and finding this informative site. I'm looking for a receiver, speaker and sub setup for under $500 ($600 if need be). I bought the Bose and while I was impressed with the sound, I couldn't set up everything (xBox etc) like need be. So, I have determined that I need a receiver in order to accomplish this.

For now, I'll probably only go with a 2.1 or 3.1 set up. I've read some things on here for the differences and advantages of the Denon 1513 v 1613 (which I'll continue to research). With that said, I have three questions:

1) Is there a better alternative to the Denon 1513? For now, I only have xBox, but may upgrade to BlueRay at some point (doubt I'll upgrade tv to 3d anytime soon).

2) what speakers do you recommend?

3) what sub do you recommend?

Like I said, I'd rather spend below $500 but will spend a little extra if need be.

I also realize that these questions may have already been answered on this forum, which I apologize for, but in my brief search I could not find any.

Thanks in advance.

IIRC, the Denon AVR-1513 doesn't have Audyssey MultEQ (I think it only has 2EQ). IMO, you should get the AVR-1613. Not sure how much that leaves for a pair of speakers and a sub, but something like this might work:
- Polk Audio Monitor 45B ($197/pr.) or Monitor 30 ($124/pr.)
- Dayton SUB-1000 ($109)

(Then, add a Polk Monitor 15C center-channel speaker, and maybe a pair of Monitor 30 surrounds.)

Or find a reciever that is a refurb or clearance that is last years model. Definetly get one with Audyssey MultEQ or similar.

+1. If you can snag a Denon AVR-1612, that would be a good one to get, too.

Great. Thanks all. Sounds like I should pay the extra for the 1613. Will the Audyssey Multeq make a big difference even if I'm only running a 2.1 set up?

Audyssey is a useful tool for system set-up / calibration and for auto-EQ'ing. Having it now will help with your 2.1 set-up, and you'll have it available - you won't need to upgrade your AVR - if/when you go to 3.1 and 5.1.

Cool. Thanks again.

I would also vote for the 1612 or 1613.

The Martin-Logan MLT-2 system is a fairly good one for Around $300-350.

or....you could get a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 10.2 speakers and have some excellent sound, but just two very good speakers; that is what I would do.

You can always add a center speaker and subwoofer later.
