Yes, that's really what cost Denver the game.

Great game though, double OT in the playoffs!

Packers/Niners game looks soft and noisy, some shots look like upconverted SD. And then there's the Joe Buck issue...

The lighting is terrible, way too many shadows on the field which is causing problems for the video portion of the broadcast. Of course, they are playing in the giant garbage dump known as Candlestick Park.

KTVU - San Francisco - Comcast

Agree, the main filed cams shots could pass for SD 16: with the soft video and edge enhancement.

WNYW-DT NYC FiOS.

Niners pound the Pack, hard! biggrin.gif

Seriously though, running QBs don't last long, Harbaugh better make sure Smith is ready to go when Kaepernick gets drilled, and it will happen.

I thought the PQ on BAL/DEN was not CBS's best effort. The main "50 yard" cams looked soft. WOIO Cleveland OTA.

I thought the PQ on GB/SF was the best I've ever seen from Fox. Looked better than CBS to me! WJW Cleveland OTA.

OTA here...I think the best quality (here anyway) is #3 CBS, #2 NBC and #1 FOX...I mean they all look spectacular, but there is just some extra 'uummpphh' from the FOX presentation.

Yeah that touchdown should never have happened, but I had a funny feeling about that last drive because I have seen Flacco and the Ravens pull those kinds of games out before with amazing TD plays. Maybe the Gods of football want to see a Harbaugh Super Bowl! In respect to picture quality the games looked fine to me on San Francisco Comcast, but of course I still remember what football looked like on old square tube SD TVs.eek.gif

When did Thom Brennaman, Brian Billick & Laura Okmin move up to the #2 announcing crew for FOX?
They are doing SEA @ ATL instead of Kenny Albert, Daryl Johnston & Tony Siragusa who had been doing the second best game all season.

CBS and NBC are 1080i. FOX is 720p.

Fox definately has a bad feed during the regular season. But there feed has been fantastic in the post season. I cant pick one feed over the other since the post season began

WNYW-DT NYC FiOS TV.

I'm finding the PQ of SEA @ ATL better then GB @ SF.

I'd rank them exactly opposite of that here in Minneapolis.. And FOX should be the same quality for everyone because of their splicer system. I'd say FOX for the playoffs has been decent where as the regular season is typically not good. Your CBS and NBC must be bad if FOX is your best.

Are we talking about OTA or cable? If cable then the discussion is irrelevant.

Though the PQ of today's game is better then Saturday, It's interesting that some say they are consistently getting good PQ from FOX.
On WNYW-DT FOX5 NYC via OTA or Verizon FiOS all sporting events have the swimming grass digital compression artifacts and the further away the camera shot is the worse the video appears.
The blimp camera shots are the worst. On GB @ SF the blimp camera looked SD.
There is also heavy motion artifacts when the players are moving and compression artifacts around the graphics.

Comparing all NFL broadcasters I get the best PQ from ESPN. Even with FiOS converting the native MPEG4 feed to MPEG2 ESPN gives a cleaner PQ then WCBS, WNBC, WNYW (FOX) and NFL Network.

For me the bottom two are obvious, FOX followed by NFLnet. I agree with emanmyr's take on FOX. As for the best, ESPN has come a long way this year and is often times great. CBS and NBC tend to have more artifact issues than ESPN but they also are a bit sharper to me. So I'd call it two tiers with CBS, NBC and ESPN in the top tier and FOX and NFL ney in the bottom.

This is via OTA and Dish in Minneapolis.

ESPN is also 720p.
I kinda find it strange that most people find the 2 best are both 720p. ESPN and Fox. Although it is very close I tend to agree. I have Time Warner Cable in Cincinnati. Thoughts?

I don't think many people find FOX to be the best.  I can count on one hand the number of "good" FOX broadcasts I saw all year.

While there are tons of factors that go into it, I would say the biggest issue is the added compression by cable/sat companies and reduced bandwidth because of subchannels by the networks.  720p requires slightly less bandwidth and compresses easier so when the bits get starved 1080i tends to look worse than 720p.

What is your display size and viewing distance?

Here's my reasoning for saying the 720p ESPN broadcasts are better, on the 1080i NFL broadcasts on WCBS, WNBC & NFL Network all of them have motion artifacts that cause a grainy video effect on camera movement from the field cams.
The 1080i broadcasts also have macroblocking on camera movement with NFL Network being the worst.
It's interesting that the NFL Network is so bad since they are not a local broadcast channel that has sub channels and should be full bandwidth.

On ESPN I get no macroblocking, and minimal if no motion artifacts and the MPEG2 bit rate averages 17.5 MB's.

I'll take ESPN HD at 720p with less resolution in exchange for no macroblocking and minimal motion artifacts compared to the macroblocked 1080i broadcasts.

They have been some great games, here's hoping the next one is just as good.

I get the sense though that the Pats are going to shred the Texans.
I wonder if the cold weather has any real effect on the picture quality? I mean in the Denver game it was around 6 degrees so all of the moisture was frozen out of the atmosphere. Considering how far away some of these cameras are shooting from i would bet you get a sharper picture on a frozen day as long as it isn't snowing.

Im thinking this based on the patriots game not looking as good to me as the denver game did yesterday.

I'm kind of undecided on who's had better pq this weekend. We watched both of Saturday's game, 720p on FOX and 1080i on CBS, and most of both games today (Pats and Titans are on now), OTA. Looking harder than I normally do (just because I knew this discussion would come up) I could find occasional issues for both as far as pq and aq went. But I have to give the nod, this time, to FOX for both days. We're about 50 miles from the towers but our LOS is dead-on-balls with no physical or man-made obstructions in the way.

It was the Pats and Texans. No matter, though. I could have been watching a 15" Zenith with rabbit ears and a clicker remote as long as the Pats won. Form without content is... well, they belong together.
