Speakers for Denon AVR-1613

HI,

I've decided on geting AVR1613 from Amazon or CrutchField.

Now it's the speakers.

The Jamo S 426 HCS 3 was on sale for $130 a week ago and I missed it. Now it's $179 in Amazon.
Either Jamo or Def Tech Pro Cinema 60 or Take Classic 5 pack with a subwoofer bought separately.

My room is 12X20 and ceiling is 8' high. Viewing disntance is 13 or 14' from my 55 inch Sony HX-800 3D TV.


I would really like to go the separate bigger speakers route but at right now, I am not sure if I want to live in my current city for long so I want something small and lighter if I move.
Also, I don't want to spend more than $300 for the speakers right now.

If I go the separate speakers route, I want to get a nice bookshelf speakers to begin with and then buy center and rears later one by one.

Is there anything I need to take it into account as far as matching center channel and rear speakers are concerned?

IMO, start with:
- a pair of Polk Monitor 45B or Monitor 30 speakers from Amazon.com; and
- Dayton SUB-1000 from Parts-Express.com.

Later, add a matching Monitor 15C center-channel speaker, and then some Monitor 30 surrounds.

And then upgrade the sub. wink.gif

Thanks. I have not heard of Dayton Audio so forgive my ignorance. Are they better than Polk 10 inch subwoofer?

I have had experience with the Polk sub (the PSW10) and it's a very modest sub for the money. Good in a smaller room and/or at moderate volume levels.

I don't have personal experience with the Dayton sub, but with an amp that's twice as powerful as the Polk's (100W vs. 50W), it should play (a little? a fair bit?) louder and dig deeper than the Polk. IMO, that's worth the extra $20.

The main difference seems to be the power input and the frequency. What difference the frequency makes?

If you see the comparison in the link above,

The Polk Audio Monitor30 Series II has a Power Rating of 20-100W. Frequency Response: 55Hz-25kHz
This costs $84 a pair.

The Polk NewMonitor 45B has Power Rating of 20-125 watts per channel and frequency response 47Hz-25kHz and Costs $169.

The DefTech StudioMonitor 350 costs just 10 dollars more and power rating is 20-200 watts and frequency response 26 Hz - 30 kHz.

The difference in frequency response, what impact it will have on sound quality? Which is better?

My Denon's power output is as below.

"Fully discrete power amplifiers for all 5 channels (120 W x 5 ch, 6ohm 1kHz 0.7%). Delivers the legendary sound quality you've come to expect from Denon. (75W x 5 ch, 8ohm 20-20kHz 0.08%)"

Since it has only 75 watts per channel, will using DefTech StudioMonitor 350 which can accept upto 200 watts per channel, has no use unless I upgrade to a receiver with higher power output?

The ratings of that DefTech speaker are a bad joke. A small speaker like that will be lucky to go down to 50 Hz, and to get down to 26 Hz you need a 12-inch subwoofer with hundreds of watts of power. Ratings on low-priced speakers are at least 50% BS.

The only way you will get anything resembling a decent subwoofer is to spend $200 on the Polk PSW200. (there are lots of good ones from $400-2000, but I assume you are not going there...lol).

The Energy Take and small Polk box systems have main drivers (which they laughably call "woofers") that are 3 inches or less; another bad joke. That is the size of the speaker in a motel clock radio (a cheap motel). IMO those systems are total trash and not worth 10 cents.

I suggest that you consider either the Jamo S426 HCS3 system with the PSW505 sub, or the Martin-Logan MLT-2 system.

Those others won't even come close to operating successfully in that size room.

Another good possibility would be four of the Polk Monitor 30 speakers, a Polk PSW505 subwoofer, and a Polk CS10 center speaker. that would be quite good for the money.

The AV-1613 is a good choice; no need to consider anything else.

The AVR-1613 will power most, if not all, mainstream speakers just fine.

The upper end of a speaker's power rating is a guideline to ensure that you don't push more power to it than it can handle. It doesn't mean that the speaker must be driven by that amount of power, or that the amp driving it has to be capable of that amount of power per channel.

DefTech is guilty of being very lax or "generous" with their specs. I would take that 26Hz @ -?dB (-10? -20?) figure with a HUGE grain of salt.

Given your budget, and IMO only, the 45Bs would make decent mains, while the Monitor 30s would make decent surrounds.

Another option: Pioneer SP-BS22 for left/right from BestBuy ($99) and then the matching center for $99. If you have a BestBuy nearby, you can demo them. Pair them with the Dayton sub that eljaycanuck suggested, and you'd have a good 3.1 setup for $300.

The Pioneer speakers have VERY POOR sensitivity, which makes them incompatible with lower-priced lower-powered receivers.

A bad choice.

Certainly, they won't get quite as loud as the Monitor30s with that receiver. But there are lots of happy Pioneer speaker owners in the owners thread running these speakers with low priced receivers that would say you are WRONG.

It sure is amazing that the Pioneer speakers can get quite loud in a 20 X 30 open room,
with a modest receiver, and they can also handle good power peaks. This has also been
tested elsewhere, not just by me.

Hello everyone! I'm fairly new to home theaters as I have only purchased HTIB systems previously. I recently picked up the Denon AVR-1613 to upgrade everything. I just also picked up 2 Polk 65t on sale at newegg for $139 each. I'm stuck on what to get for the center, rears and sub. For the center I was looking at the Polk CS10 as I read some good reviews but am open to suggestions. I'm not looking for super expensive speakers, I was originally looking at the energy 5.1 set but wanted the larger floor standing speakers. Any help and advice is greatly appreciated!
