Sub for Energy Take Classics

I was debating this exact same thing, I am currently using an 10 year old Sony 60W 6.5" subwoofer and it's ok, but I wanted a better subwoofer and was looking at the EXACT same subs as you are. That is until I happened upon the Velodyne VX-11 two for $229 deal on Velodynes site. I started doing some research and found very little negative info on the VX-11's so I decided to pull the trigger and order them. They should be on their way in the next day or two and I am excited to get them and set them up and give them a listen...A friend of mine also has the bic f12 and I may barrow that for a day just to do a comparison. I also decided on the VX-11's because they are a little smaller in size and I can do dual subs for about the same price or a little more that one of the others.

One thing I had read somewhere on here I think was that the one or two peoples opinions were that the F12 didn't handle the upper range that well and since we have the Take Classics and need to set the crossover around 120 or so to be properly setup it might not be ideal...because they are small satellites we need to make sure the sub(s) we get can reproduce the upper end of their specs as well as the lower end so we don't miss out on anything.

I am wondering though what two dayton sub-1200's or Sub-1000's would be like in comparison to the VX-11's for about the same price point too.

I like the takes for what I paid for them...I picked them up for $124 shipped from woot.com a few weeks ago...much better deal than buying the box 5.1 set (which I almost did when amazon had it for $299) since you can get a much better subwoofer (or even duals) for about the same price as the 5.1 combo. Especially with only paying $124 for the satellites...

Anyway, those are just my thoughts so far on my experience with the exact same speaker setup and decisions and I hope it helps some.

At the price the Velodyne is on Amazon I wouldn't consider it, you can get two of them for about the same price on Velodynes site...so you might want to scratch that off...I just figured I would give you another option...there are always other things to buy on Amazon with the credit

I would also suggest to buy the Dayton from Part Express directly if you're interested in it, they charge more for shipping on Amazon vs their own site, I think it is $10 to ship it from Parts express where they want $30 to ship it if bought through amazon. Again, I know it's not on amazon but for these two scenarios Amazon is not the cheapest option this time around.

The Polk I was seriously debating, then crossed it off my list for reasons I can't remember after researching it. It does have tons of good reviews on amazon and decent specs, but people seem to crap on the polk psw series, I've never had one, so don't know why...I guess they are cheaper products.

Please share your experience when it comes in. Mine (v1220) arrived and it's not producing very much sound. I wonder if it needs to break in?

What is your volume set at? I have the v1220 for my upstairs system. And it's set at 5. And puts out a lot of bass for me. Whether its movie or music.

Did it do that right out of the box? Mine is set at 7 and is disappointing right now.

It did do the same. I don't know if you have this option. But when I had my hk avr 700 and 1700. I had set the sub to yes rather then plus. And I was barely getting any bass. And until I spoke with bic america customer support. They told me to switch to plus in my receiver sub setting. And It was producing a lot after making the switch to plus. Go through the receiver manual and see if you can find that sub setting.

Then I'll let the Energy owners take over. 150 seems crazy high even for satellite speakers. Surely they can play down to 120 efficiently?

Try 100 on the receiver and turn the crossover on the sub all the way up.

I have a set of the Energy take 5 Classics. The specifications on these speakest is that they go down to 115. I tried them at 110, 120 and 150. With the new sub that I just purchased (SVS SB12-NDS) I found that 120 works best with these speakers. My room is 12 x 12.
