CES: Panasonic Unveils 2013 TVs; New Smart TV Interface

Here’s a rundown on some of the key announcements made at the discussion.

•In its big update to its Smart TV interface, Panasonic unveiled a feature called My Home Screen, a new personalized home page feature that pre-organizes your favorite content from multiple sources; you get a different screen for each user based on their preferences and viewing habits.
•They also demonstrated Swipe & Share 2.0, the ability to take photos and videos from your phone or tablet on a large screen with a swipe of a finger. You can actually add writing to images on the screen with your finger, and then email the result, creating a sort of TV-created post card. Nice.
•Some YouTube exec demonstrating how you can turn your mobile device into a remote control for YouTube.
•HSN CEO Mindy Grossman makes an appearance; they have a new HSN Shop By Remote application. This is a Web-like experience on the TV.

As I suspected from a cash poor company....more smart features (cheap to develop) but no news of anything revolutionary in the panels. They have rebranded to include a ZT series...maybe more will be revealed?

No 70", right? frown.gif

New Plasma flagship is the ZT series. Very interested to find PQ differences between it and the new VT series. And, of course, pricing.

pretty underwhelming. don't care about home screen personalizations or youtube apps.
no details about the visual quality improvements.

so vt is the new gt, zt is the new vt
yeah it sucks they didnt talk about the specs of the TV and how much the picture has improved.
I have my GT50 coming on Wednesday and now im not sure if i should cancel it or keep it.
I don't personally care about any of that app stuff either. That is for my phone, not my HDTV in the living room. The lineup this year should be called 2012+.

Essentially. Panasonic would describe it as ZT is new, VT replaces VT, and GT is gone.

Well, I'm assuming you're getting a great deal on the GT right? None of the new sets will be a great deal probably for another 11 months. IMO if Panny had anything new and revolutionary to say about the panels meeting or beating Kuros we'd be hearing all about it. But nothing from them except about "features". I wouldn't hold my breath either. The awards and such were for their LCD improvements/displays.

Screen size and PQ matter. That other stuff isn't going to matter to most here (including me). Unless I heard wrong, they will only offer up to 65". Guessing the ZT and VT will come in 55/65 again?

Also, would like to know about 3D glasses. Will there be a new 2013 which improves upon the TY-ER3D4MU? Will their be compatiblity with 2012? Will a pair come with the TVs, etc?

Well I do have a 60 day reurn policy on the TV since I got it at best buy and am a silver member, so I can always try it out and always return it. It was only like $1100. And if I see all the IR, flickering and line bleed i have been hearing about a lot. I will just return it.

Its being delievered on Wed I can always see if any specs come out today or tomorrow. I should have just waited another week under after CES before buying this tv

2 pairs of active 3D eyewear will come with the new 2013 ST, VT, and ZT plasma models.

Ok. That should have been a given before now. Will they be the 2012 TY-ER3D4MU? I still feel that Best Buy or Panasonic owes me a pair.

Why?? You're in the perfect position. You have 59 days to test the new TV while learning about the new one.

HSN Shop by Remote App?!?!

Finally! I can order samurai swords without having to pick up the phone or use a computer.

I've found all Smart TV apps to be very underwhelming in the Apps department. They can keep polishing the interface but there are only so many ways to get to the apps that actually have any real use, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Vudu etc.

Does anyone really use any of the 'educational' apps to teach their kids anything? Always just seems like it's easier to teach your kid how to read with a book, or maybe an iPad/Tablet than to use a TV remote to learn how to read….

Carry on, curmudgeon out. smile.gif

Just the hassle of swapping it out. Will we get price points tomorrow?

I don't really agree, since that would have just increased the price for including glasses. Plus, the non panasonic (Samsung) glasses work just as good, and are drastically cheaper.

This is a sad day in a way. I never thought it would come to companies competing on features. The ZT pr has verbiage that was used for the VT and now i discover this:

"LG says its smartphones in 2013 will be able to beam games directly to its Ultra HD TV sets, upscaling the resolution to match the bigger display, and even providing 3D viewing capabilities."

The Japanese are fighting on the wrong front. They can't keep up.

With all these new apps and such on the plasma TVs. i hope they totally got rid of IR or those people that use their plasma tvs for all those HSN apps will have tuns of IR, it will be a mess

Yeah so it seems like their US lineup now gels with their Japanese lineup, as of last year at least Japan had no GT and their ZT was our VT. Still interested to see how the new lineup will compare to my VT50. Depending on reports my VT may hit the classifieds in a few months... smile.gif
post #20 of 516
It seems that there is no true successor to the UT series. You have the S60 and X60 which do not have 3D, and then you jump to the ST60 with nothing in between. Sounds like the UT was outselling the ST and Panasonic just closed that hole.
What do you think the odds are that pre-2013 Panasonic plasmas get to update to the new Smart TV interface?
Highly unlikely as that seems to be the top selling point for the 2013 models.
I wouldn't count on it. For what it's worth I never used any of the smart features or the touch remote on mine after the first week of ownership.

I think this is a smart move and probably shows where the short-term future of plasma lies - high end option for the core people of this forum who value performance and then middle of the road options for the bang for buck/niggardly crowd.

Oh Winston...how high end can we be if you're using a word that could get any of us fired? wink.gif

Bring on the calibrator/reviewer black level measurements already. This is almost (another) nonevent (the other being the $12k LG OLED announcement).
