I looks like 24 bays vs 20 bays is obvious difference.

But I am unsure of the other small differences. I don't need more than 20 bays so I am leaning towards the 4220. Anything special or different between these two models?

It looks like the Norco 4220 has room for an optical drive???




The 4224 does not have this?

(Can you just use a drive bay for a standard DVD ROM ?)

I don't even have a DVD rom in my server now so not sure it matters. I only hook one up to install WHS2011 then remove it. I never need it after that.

How about the 4020 vs 4220 ?? I can't seems to find the difference of the $30 between these two ???

yeah I got that.

The 4224 obviously has the extra row total 24 HDD's.

But I will use mostly 3TB drives so it's not expected to hit more than 20HDD's. By the time I hit that I would move into replacing smaller drives with 4TB or larger ones.

20 bays is enough.

But I am trying to determine other differences.

Is the $70 extra for the 4224 simply because of the extra 4 HDD's? If so.. I don't need that. If there is some other advantage making it better I don't know about- I would like to know before I purchase.


Also,

The same for the 4020 and 4220. $30 more for the 4220. What does it have over the 4020 ? They look the same ?

Essentially it's just HDD capacity. Though I don't know if the 24 bay has better fans since the density of drives is higher.

You won't be able to put an optical drive in one of those bays they ate too short. Just connect an optical drive through USB for the very few times you will need one.

Thanks I settled on 4220 I think.

It has optical bay that is externally accessible.

Also has mini SAS connectors for SATA cards like my IBM card. Cleaner look.

I don't need 24 bays as 20 is enough and also the 4224 lacks optical bay. So 4224 is not for me.

4020 is also bad because its all SATA cables and not 4 to 1 SAS. That's a wire mess and not for my cards.

I just need to find a good SAS mini to 4 SATA cable connector so I can use the 4 ports on my mobo .

Advice ?
