OFFICIAL Samsung Smart TV "Evolution Kit" Thread - Page 41

I'm sure this has been discussed but I don't have the time to weed through 40 pages of comments.

I have a 2011 55" LED 8000 Smart TV (UN55D8000YF). Working in communications and IT, I'm pretty certain it's a lack of hardware support, but why isn't the "Evolution Kit" compatible with 2011 models? Thanks and sorry if the question has been asked over and over. smile.gif

The supported 2012 models have an expansion slot in the back of the set where the evolution kit is inserted. There is no way to attach the evolution kit to the 2011 tv hardware (AFAIK).
nope, the D-series dont have a evolutionkit expansion slot in the back. you could put a android tv-stick into it which makes it sorta on par with latest internet stuff on tv's. the image of a D8000 is really not that bad so i wouldnt be worried about it too much.
having a ES8000 with evolutionkit is considerably faster then a F-model. compared this in the store over here, next to eachother.
having a EK for the F-series is not available since it has the same software as the ES with a EK as mentioned.
the 4K technology is not really mainstream and will not be for the comming 3 years if not more.
think ur best off buying a ES8000 with a EK on it, as far as i can tell its cheaper then a F8000 and faster also and you wont miss a thing.
there are not a lot of people that see the difference between 1080p and 720p so a 4K tv is a little too much for most people. a F9500 oled tv will have much better image then a led and is probably more worth the money.

First time I've heard this. It would be an interesting find if proven true

Hi
I was very satisfied with my EVO kit, had it a couple of months, much faster browser, improved Smart Hub etc.

That was until I tried to watch a 3D movie, ghosting/crosstalk is so bad its unwatchable. Tried several movies, some of them was perfect before installing the EVO kit.

Anyone else with the same problem, any suggestions to fix this?

The brighter the picture, the more prone you will be to crosstalk from what I understand. Have you tried one of the other preset modes for 3D? Tried lowering the brightness/backlight a bit?

I would double check your 3D depth settings. Make sure you haven't messed with them. There are a few 3D settings that will cause severe crosstalk if adjusted to one extreme or another. Just bring up the 3D options through the picture menu and you'll find them. The 3D button on the remote won't let you access them.

Thanks for answering.
I have checked the 3D options and the depth settings are greyed out.

Thanks for answering. I am not sure, preset mode for 3D, like Normal, Movie etc? Cannot find any other preset modes.

Apologies for the double posting in another thread, but it appears this is the 'official' Samsung Evolution Kit thread.

I just received 2 evolution kits (SEK-1000) from John Lewis here in the UK. I've tried installing both kits in succession on one TV (UE55ES8000) with no joy, on either attempt. I thought there maybe something wrong with the first TV so then I tried on the second TV (same model) and no joy either.

As instructed, both TV's were upgraded to firmware 2009 using the online update method, prior to installing the EK. The power was always off at the wall on insertion/removal of the devices.

I'm going to send both kits back to JL, but I've never had 2 DOA's before. Is this possibly a firmware compatibility issue??

TIA

Yes. Movie mode will probably give you the least amount of brightness in 3D mode, Dynamic the most amount, but I would recommend just sticking to Standard with close to default settings. Dynamic is the brightest mode for 3D, but not one I'd use unless the 3D picture is viewed in a very bright room. Reset your picture settings after you get into 3D mode if you need to get them back to default.

Are you watching in a dark or semi-dark room? If so backlight probably should be between 8-15 depending. Leave brightness at default and try just lowering the backlight to get the best setting. If you are still having crosstalk issues switch from Standard to Movie mode and play with the backlight from there

Your 3D settings should be on Auto with depth etc. greyed out. Make sure you are not enabling 2D-3D conversion accidently on either your tv or bluray player...that would cause some issues

I am also having 3D problems. Had the Evo kit for two weeks now. Went to watch a 3D movie and it wont screen in 3D. I have to turn 3D on and off with the 3D button on the remote to get it to start - then! - really funky stuff happening with the picture. Almost looks like the 3D is reversed. Hurts to look at. Started to play around and discovered that if I press the 3D button on the remote it fixes it, sometimes it is corrected if I pause the movie or chapter skip, sometimes if I change the picture from dynamic to standard or visa vrsa. Seems to be random and sometimes nothing fixes it at all but if I turn it all off and come back 10 min later it works fine. I have sent an email to Samsung but not holding my breath.

For the 3D noobs just know that you may be enabling 2D-3D conversion accidently. I think some of you may be doing that. It's important to know that there are 2 ways of enabling 3D on this set: The first is Auto in which the tv will automatically switch into 3D mode when it detects it. The second is Message Notice which will tell you it detects a 3D signal - but you still have to hit the 3D button

But if you have it on Message Notice, the rub is that if you If you have a receiver, you need to make sure that it is on the correct source (bluray) before you turn on the bluray player with the 3D disc in it. If you wait until AFTER you power on the bluray player and then switch sources on your receiver, a lot of times the disc will either A. Not play at all B. It will just play in 2D instead AND THAT is where you will have issues if you proceed to hit the 3D button and accidently enable 3D conversion. You will need to power off your bluray player and power it back on so that the tv will correctly identify/detect a 3D signal and you will be enabling true 3D and not conversion mode

You can avoid this whole scenario by making sure that you have 3D settings set to 'Auto' where the tv will switch into 3D automatically when it detects the source. As I said above, you still should wait until after you've switched the receiver over to bluray before powering on your bluray player

I have mine set to Message Notice because my tv will sometimes detect a 3D signal when there isn't one, such as turning on the Xbox 360 for some reason it will go into 3D mode when it doesn't need to. But most of you guys should probably just leave it on Auto and follow the above steps

1 step to ensure you are not accidently enabling 2D-3D conversion (when you have it set to Message Notice) is by knowing that when your set is detecting a source and you press the 3D button on your tv remote - you will not see a 3D sub-menu show up on the tv - it will just go into 3D mode. However, if you are doing it wrong you will see the 3D sub menu with 2D-3D shown in a square on the screen when you press the 3D button on your remote

Complicating things further, you may have a bluray player like me that also has 2D to 3D conversion and a button for it on the bluray remote. Make sure that your set up for detecting 3D is set to Auto on all devices in their respective settings menus and you will have the most fool proof setup

Hi all, I installed the evo kit to my Australian 55" ES80000 and I have praise for the upgrade. Except for the new TV guide; slow and glitchy. But I do love the overall interface and the new found speed at start up. It has automatically updated its own firmware about 3 times since May and each time new features appear. First was the channel selection by writing channel numbers on the remote's scratch pad, which I love!
I can't recall the TV having DTS & DTS neo 2:5 before the evo kit was installed but I stumbled upon that a few nights ago....... may have been there from the start, but it is nice to have found it.
There has been an annoying addition on one of the firmware upgrades and that is the appearance of a 5th "page" in smarthub..... pay movies.

The $200 was worth it IMHO

Cheers, David

In my opinion the set with EK and without EK is chalk and cheese as far as interface is concerned, could not go backwards now...........

Thanks mate. I do understand the difference between the two types of 3D. I have the samsung bluray player and the TV set to auto. I am 100% certain the evolution kit is causing problems with 3D playback.

I maybe barking up the wrong tree posting this here but I have just recently experienced a problem with the Samsung Smart Hub 2013 when trying to access Video content either via the Smart Hub or Via Source input.

When you select Source and then Mezzmo (My Media Server) you are given four choices, Video, Music, Photos, All Content. If I select Video the TV goes into loading mode and then either hangs or reverts back to the TV program with a message about unable to play content. The same thing happens when you try and access video content through the Smart Hub, although I am given a submenu choice for Mezzmo, Dropbox, USB etc.
Music, Photos and All Content works absolutely fine. So for now I am having to go via All content to access the video menus.

I suspect that this maybe a Samsung Issue as appose to a Mezzmo (Media Server)mad.gif issue as if I try and access Dropbox for example via the video content route it hangs in the same way.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so, did you solve it??

PS. I am running the Smart Hub on an ES8000 with Evolution Kit.

Thanks mad.gif

I had a similar issue with PS3 media server. The problem seemed to happen right after a samsung update. I tried uninstalling PS3 media server and that didnt work. As it turned out PS3 media server wasnt completely uninstalling. There was a folder left behind and maybe I didnt restart the PC, anyways I reinstalled PS3 media server and everything was fine.
Maybe your Mezzimo got corrupted somehow, just try a reinstall.

I have just reset the Samsung TV to factory settings and the problem appears to have gone away!!

Thanks for the help.

Is it possible to get the US apps and content in Canada? I have a ES8000.

Some in this thread have suggested the possibility by using unblock-us.com to change the dns. I'm in Maryland, USA so I don;t have any personal experience with the canadian side of things.

Does anyone know anything about when in 2014 the newest Evolution Kits will be available for the 2013 model sets? Specifically the UN60F8000BF.
Evo Kits will only be released as required by new technology developments.

Ah, I see. I was under the impression that there would definitely be one per year (upgrade the 2013 models to 2014 standards, upgrade the 2014 models to 2015 standards, etc.)

Hi a sales rep told me yesterday that future evolution kits would be able to turn a 1080p resolution display into 4k on the f8000. Is this even possible?

A screen's native resolution is determined at manufacturer and can not be increased. An Evo kit could add display of a 4k signal to a TV from new connectors that support 4K but the displayed resolution would be limited by the screen's native resolution. Yes, new HDMI standard connectors can be supported by future evo kits. It was discussed by Samsung reps & engineers in answer to questions from the audience at 2013 HDTV Shootout. I heard it live over the webcast but the audio quality was so bad it was cut from the youtube video I mentioned here http://www.avsforum.com/t/1450292/official-samsung-smart-tv-evolution-kit-thread/900_100#post_23488050 .

I got the impression from the discussion between the Samsung presenter and the off mike Samsung engineers that supporting future inputs was something they were very enthusiastic about for future evo kits. The evo kit design does not restrict how this could be done. Evo kits have access to all the sets existing input connectors. There could be a new connector on the future kit, a pigtail with a female connector on the kit, or cable to external box with connectors. We will have to wait and see how they decide is best and it could be different for different models.

All of this is of course driven by the acceptance process for AV device connection standards.

Sounds kind of like misinformation. Its not going to make a 1080p set like a F8000 have 4K resoultion no matter what unless the panel itself is upgraded which is not at all likely. However, the Samsung 4K sets released before now will be able to have new 4K capable connections via future Evo Kits. However other companies are countering this by going ahead and releasing 4K tv's today that already have HDMI 2.0 ports and are therefore futureproofed out of the box. Samsung may have been one of the first out of the gate to say "we have a solution" months earlier, but it doesn't really matter that much since a few months later HDMI 2.0 is being included in with the current 4K sets being released today

Yes it is possible. You can use free US dns numbers but I found that they dont last. I just do the unblockus thing $5 a month. they have instructions on their site how to change your regional app menu to a US one. The US menu has way more apps, you can then get US netflix and I subscribe to Amaazon Prime for $79 per year.
I tried to help someone else on here from Canada. His provider was Shaw I believe and for some reason the unblockus thing doesnt work with Shaw. Unblockus works great for me though....oh ya I almost forgot not only do you get the US netflix but you will also get the 3D stuff too. Normally the 3D stuff requires that your provider have an open connect with netflix. To my understanding not many or any do in Canada but with unblockus it works.
