OFFICIAL Samsung Smart TV "Evolution Kit" Thread - Page 2

If they overprice them, no one will buy one. If no one buys the first generation, watch out for no further upgrade kits. Most hardware add-ons fail.

This is already a fairly limited market. How many people will even know they exist or care...
I love how the guy in the video adds in at the last sentence "and will improve your picture quality" without explaining in any way how or why... total BS.

That samsung guy in the video was a quack..... definitely a bunch of BS, all only for $500, my rear end....I need more info from a better source..those CES show reps are idiots.....
like you said it before, a dual core processor should be more than adquate to take care of the smart hub nonsense..all they need is better software programming...

Here is a great example of just that! smile.gif

They can have the smart hub back (go ahead and remove it from my TV) and give me $200 if it's that great. smile.gif

Seriously, the apps are junk on these Smart TVs. The only usable/worthwhile ones are the Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hudu, HBO GO and Crackle type apps. And those are already available on xboxs, DVD players, Apple TVs/Roku's etc. The rest are garbage.

Not counting computers, tablets or phones, I've got 4 devices in my entertainment center that work with Netflix (and I don't have a subscription because the content just doesn't interest me).

If the point of the Evolution Kit is to allow the Smart Hub to be faster, then it's a waste IMO. Who needs to ignore the smart hub faster than it can already be ignored.

For $500 a person could get an iPad or whatever Android tablet is popular at the time and get a real second screen solution.

I don't need my TV to 'discover' stuff for me to watch.

Maybe I'll wait until they do the last upgrade in 5 years and buy it then. But yearly? Not convinced, yet.

*Update on evolution kits "mystery cable" !!

It does not seem to be an additional 4th HDMI input. frown.gif

I think it is an ethernet connection??

Have a look for yourself;

Yeah it looks like their ethernet connection is plugged into the adapter thing coming off the side of the evolution kit

And when he spins the kit around in his hand toward the end of the video there is another smaller connection on the other side of the kit (possibly a traditional ethernet connection?)

I just hope next years evolution kit adds at least one more HDMI input and some sort of picture quality upgrade.

I will most likely purchase the evolution kit in hope that it will stop the Smart Hub bug of flashing up within a few minutes of power up. I can't believe samsung has not fixed this yet. frown.gif

thanx for the video brotha.....

yet another idiotic samsung rep at CES...and that guy was asking all the wrong questions.....

How bout they ask this: If average consumer gets a brand new tv every 7 years, why in the world should i have to upgrade my brand new 2012 tv thats less than a year old....

Total BS...HORSE MANUAH....and once you buy an evolution kit, its only good for that year....if I want the 2014 features, I would have to buy the 2014 evolution kit....that's an OUTRIGHT OUTRAGEOUS SCAM.......

am I the only one that feels this way?mad.gif

the 2013 Evolution Kit is only good for this year's tv new features, if you want new features from 2014 model TVs, you are gonna yet have to buy another evolution kit in 2014....total BS....ONE evolution kit should last for the next 4 years, just update the software....

H/W is updated every year. So, how can one update cater for all 4 years? (could be CPU > 4 cores in 3+ years). I like having the option to updated it each of the next 4 years. I won't be updating it every year. Maybe this year or the 4th year. It's actually noble of Samsung to take the initiative and provide this path. I hope that all manufacturers do the same.

dude I agree with you to a point....I love the concept of upgrading the hardware...but come on..$500? A new evolution kit everysingle year? Dual core chipset can do a lot....now with a quad core even more....what's in store for next years? octa core? come on..they have to make it at a reasonable price too.....maybe they should focus on developing and programming better software. Trust me a dual core and quad core is plenty...

Trust me, Im a software engineer by trade, I program tons of software for hardware with lesser specs.... its all a money making machine if you ask me...
This year is simply going to be a market test to see if anyone will actually buy the thing... if they sell enough numbers they will bake into next years sets as well... my guess is if it fails to sell they will axe the upgradability from future models.

May be good for us 2012 owners if they don't sell well, might be able to get a good deal towards the end of the year... kinda like Xbox's HD Player....

I agree with you...I like to test drive it....but not for $500.....I might get it from amazon, then return within the 30 day window....we shall see.....

PERSONALLY....I think the concept is great.....but due to pricing and greediness...it will fail and be a flop for public relations....as an engineer , I think is a great idea..but they have to go about it differently...wink.gif
post #47 of 574
500 bucks is steep but the price will come down over the course of the year just like TV's. I'm only buying the thing if it somehow improves some picture aspect to my set... even if it's just 3D.

I notice Samsungs OLED is the first to market individual 3D viewing of HD content. http://samsung2013ces.com/ces-photos/hands-on-close-up-oled-tv-f9500/#!prettyPhoto , would be cool if the evo kit could do the same.

Agreed. $500 is steep. However, is that price official? I'd probably get it anyways, as I'm a bit of a gadget geek, lol.

Speaking of four years, I thought I should post this over here.

I apologize ahead of time for the fact that this is coming from an Apple site, but it was reporting on Brian White's (of Topeka Capital Markets) thoughts on the TV biz and he seems to have mentioned the following....

"Of note at this year's show is Samsung's Evolution Kit, a hardware upgrade that will boost functionality in last year's HDTV sets. The kit is expected to be available in the second quarter of this year, and Samsung has promised a three-year commitment to customers, so that a 2012 smart TV can use 2015 features."

That stands in contrast to the supposed confirmation that the Evo Kit would be out in March and to the video of the Samsung exec saying it would be supported for 4 years, so that a 2012 smart TV can use up to 2016 features.

thanks for the article, but thats not any new NEWS.....

dont get confused....everyyear you will need a new evolution kit if you wanna keep up with the jones'....the 2013 evo kit will only keep up with this years models, not 2014's....read my comments above....I cant stress this enough.....

BTW...enough with apple already....apple should just shut the eff up and come out with their own TV already....Im tired of hearing of it...put your money where your mouth is and come out with the tv already...

its very easy for apple to whine, biatch, and complain about other companies HDTVs, where's theirs? Ive been hearing for years of their imaginary TV...enough already.....

lol....had to get that off my chest.... rolleyes.gif
post #53 of 574
Agreed, but what I meant was the Samsung guy said that each model year would get 4 years worth of upgrade, the last Evo Kit for a 2012 model would be 2016 - one a year. This new article seems to state that each model year will only be supported for 3 Evo Kit upgrades, not 4, until 2015 for the 2012 model.

HA, I would expect nothing less from you. smile.gif Hence me apologizing in advance haha. Hey they've never said anything, well except Jobs in the book kind of, but the press and stock managers (like this guy) have been jumping all over that for years. Part of me never expects it to happen. It's like lately with the press and stock guys insisting Apple is coming out with a cheap phone this year. I've been shaking my head and today Apple says uh, no we're not. Or a watch. Huh?

very well said...what a joke how they are going bout this evolution kit....eek.gif

I would be interested in the evolution kit if it could do the following:

- display a reference picture that typically would show banding. Also a reference picture that would show flashlighting. The reference pictures would contain crosses that are used later for positioning.
- the so much valued dear customer takes a photo of the reference picture.
- the valued dear customer goes to a Samsung website and uploads the photo.
- the Samsung website uses the position crosses to reference the photo to a 16:9 frame.
- the Samsung website analyzes the photo for banding and flashlighting, taking screen reflection into account, and produces a correction matrix.
- the valued dear customer downloads the correction matrix and loads it to the flat panel.
- the evolution kit with the correction matrix eliminates banding and corrects flashlighting (at the expense of lowest black, as the flashlight area cannot be made blacker).
- the dear valued customer is happy.
- the dear valued customer is even happier if price is less than xxx$.

Sorry for keep repeating myself.. But I'd be happy if the evolution kit just added an extra HDMI input or two.. Who would not benefit from extra HDMI inputs... All of us would benefit. Three HDMI inputs on a costly flagship TV is rediculous when everyone else has four or more HDMI inputs. I am at the point where I cannot add any more HDMI devices. frown.gif

I hope someone from samsung reads this and takes notes for the next evolution kit release.
