OFFICIAL Samsung Smart TV "Evolution Kit" Thread - Page 18

I am debating on if I should get the Evolution Kit, just get a new Tablet, or get a thin and light Ultrabook or Laptop with the Intel Haswell chip and Windows 8.1. I have never had a tablet, not sure if I would like holding one for long periods of time. Maybe that would be better with an 8" tablet?

I didn't have clouding it flashlighting problems before, so I can't judge, sorry. I have a version 03 of the panel, should this mean anything to you.

So far I haven't seen any new picture modes at all - so probably we're stuck with the original PQ.

Concerning smart hub: all apps will be deleted and reinstalled again. Big news: after redownload I had 230 mb filled of - drumroll - 1.1 gb! So this is a big improvement.

How is the web browser any faster with page loading and scrolling? What about YouTube videos? Thanks.

I'm dying to know if this improves picture quality and if you get additional extra menu selections like the "black optimizer" found on the F series plasmas. I thank the ones who dove in early to test it out and cannot wait to hear. I am skeptical of any enhancements besides having the hevc h.265 codec which would only benefit streaming content and 4k material I believe. I want to believe it is like replacing your ECU in your car with an optimized ECU and you get HP gains and improves everything else as well just like the kit and the image on our panels. Here's hoping my gut instinct is incorrect and this enhances picture quality across the board. BTW I own a PN60E7000 and PN43F4500.

No additional menu like "black optimizer" on my LED (don't know if the plasmas react differently to the evo kit) - also no PQ improvement.

Otherwise nice improvement of speed and smart hub, of course. This is a toy for gadget freaks, I guess ;-)

do the menus look different?

I haven't had a lot of time. But it installed nicely, and the remote is improved. BUT....why can't they put video controls, like PAUSE, PLAY, BACK, and FORWARD on it. I use those with Netflix, etc. SO I still need the other remote. I'm guess that eventually the NEW remote will go into the drawer.

I'm glad I wrote down all the tweaks I had done, as I had to re enter them.

I had to re enter all my passwords, Netflix, etc.

The interface is better, but nothing earth shattering.

I will dig into it more in the next day or two.

My first impression is.....meh, overall. I guess maybe its worth it if you have money to blow. But you certainly don't NEED it. In 2013 anyway.

Ok....update...the MORE button give you the controls I was saying were missing. So. Thats a plus.

Added: Web browser is a lot better. Feels like a real web browser.

As Zombie1210 already stated, the browser is a real improvement. But not only ergonomically, but also in terms of speed, which is what you wanted to know...

And the YouTube interface is also nicer + speedier IMO.

My review:

Ok i have UN60ES8000. i got my evolution kit today overnight. paid 215. i started off saying might not get it..but once released i ordered yesterday

1. It is more than a smart hub upgrade. Honestly.... The menu, smart hub, settings All look like the unXXF8000 series. so its a total revamp of the menu setup etc. It does basically make ur tv "like" the UNXXF8000. however as stated black optimizer etc is probably not there as maybe the tv is not capable of it....that im not sure why. but your software version will be 1003 when ur finish. hence forward ur updates will probably be coming from the F series from now on.

2. Why it maybe a benefit to upgrade now?
If these things do sell well, the companies that we are getting them from for under retail. will start selling at MSRP. so just something to think about it. But for me I feel like the evolution kit completed my 8000 series experience. samsung fixed what they missed last year. as i stated from the remote to the menus its just like the F series 8000. so if you use the IR blaster with ur STB and ur blu ray player. You get much better coordination with your tv. I now can use One remote finally! your options are really right at ur fingertips with this one remote..instead of being limited as much with prev remote.

3. the last thing is the Quad Core processor.
It HELPS!. it speeds the menu and the tv performance. while picture maynot be so much improved, (which maybe debate in a few months..cause something is different..im not sure what it is..but it just seems a lil better to me, but i could be wrong).
its just like a computer guys. you upgrade the processer to add more cores and you get lot better speed and can do way more. these tvs nowadays are like gigantic computers. and we are using applications. (apps) which in term the processors are providing better experience using applications.

now to decide if you want to buy is strictly a personal decision. for me it honestly benefited me. Depending on how much u paid for your tv. adding 200$ to what u paid maybe a big deal and i understand. But for those who have been getting these tvs for 2300-2500$. this isnt bad. I ended up getting my tv for 2799$. got the free soundbar, which i sold for 200$ so. i think it was a win-win.

also anynet works much better as well. im going thru my sony receiver for my blu ray player and the tv recognizes my samsung 3d player fine and i can use one remote no prob fully functional. before because i went thru receiver the samsung blu ray player functions were limited.

but honestly..when has a processor upgrade been under 200$. it happens but not often. now could samsung have done this better. YES much better.!! but im gonna say its not a waste. just hopefully in the future they learn from this experience

Also most of my information stayed. like my apps. now im not sure about my custom settings to picture quality. ill have to check that

How, about AllShare? Anyone with the hub tried to stream some video from computer or smart phone?
An odd thing. About HALF of my apps are now missing. Nothing that really bothers me not to have. Just a dozen or so free apps I had installed.

Anyone else have this happen to them?

Same here - the Evo Kit "upgrade" even deleted ALL apps. But when I started to re-download one of those, all others were downloaded automatically as well. So now I'm back to the app-state I had before.

Wishful thinking after spending $180?

Hopefully in a few months there will be some $50 sales on this thing. Then I would probably buy one. Probably worth 50 bucks just for the better remote.

I'm wondering if that impression about the PQ being different is just because the settings go back to the defaults? I noticed my picture being "different". Not better. I went back in and did some of the very minor tweaks that I had done, and I'm glad i had written everything down before plugging in the EVO. My tweaks were VERY minor tweaks, but just enhough to make the PQ how I like it. I am still amazed at the PQ of this TV.

I did figure out that one of the apps that disappeared was a cheap card game that I had PURCHASED. Only 99 cents, but having to BUY it again, is pretty much B.S.

I have actually put the original, non touch remote away, and I use the new touch one. MUCH better than that silver hunk of crap that came with the TV.

While I think its goofy to TALK to a TV, I tried out the voice command feature, and it does work quite well.

A side note:

I have an ethernet cable that runs to my AVR. It runs under the house and comes up behind my system. I had been been running my 55" ES8000 on my wireless network, but just for fun, I grabbed a cheap Gigabit Ethernet switch, and plugged the SR7007 AND the ES8000 into it.

I get super fast speeds with Comcast Xfinity, and now everything in the Smart Hub runs really fast. It ran good before, but every once in a while, while watching NetFlix, it would stutter or stall for a couple seconds. Now movies load super fast, and run smooth. Obviously not all attributed to the EVO Kit, but in combination with the EVO, I'm running real smooth and fast. The web browser pretty much performs like a REAL web browser. Its now something I can actually use.

Do you know if the new remote works with the TV if the Evo is not plugged in?

I don't know. I'm not unplugging the EVO to find out, and then find that I have to redo my settings again.

If you say a web site name into the remote say something like Engadget.com does that automatically bring up that site and go into PIP mode? Thanks, Craig.

No. But it does bring me a beer when I ask it to.

Greetings! May i ask if installing the evolution kit has any effect on picture settings, specifically as I had my UN46ES7500 professionally calibrated by Best Buy in the movie picture mode. I am very pleased with the picture quality as is and would hate to lose the calibrated settings. Would appreciate any feedback on the question. Thank You in advance

Can someone please confirm if there are any differences between the SEK1000/ZA (US), SEK1000/VG (UK) and SEK1000/XY (Aust) other than country of sale.

Also, re the monitor, I thought the PS60E6500 has the same PQ as the PS60E8000 but not the smarts - see http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/samsung-pn60e6500/4505-6482_7-35159642.html

Ok, I have installed mine. Overall, ok. The voice functions are a bit clunky. The pages could be more user filtered.
To be honest I am a bit underwhelmed .

I think it does. I tried it out before installing the kit and it seemed to me that it was fine -- but I certainly didn't try all commands!

BTW - installing the kit on a plasma set is a bit different as the kit installs in a vertical orientation and the module needs to be pulled up a bit for the plug to match. Otherwise, the installation went very well with no re-plugs necessary. I note I did need to use the original IR remote to get thru the install as I hadn't depended on the old remote's connection. No problem if you do it that way as all is fine. The new remote is GREAT!!

NHL Playoffs are GREAT on my TV.

That is all.
