I havent seen alot of compelling reports....yet.

Hey Blade Ya I guess in your case it wouldnt make sense to get the Evo. I used to use the PS3 and Oppo for Netflix. I couldnt get Amazon Prime on either though. When I got the 60ES7500 I didnt plan on using it for surfing. I really didnt care about voice and hand commands either. I just bought it for the great picture, like you did. Ever since I changed the smart hub to the US version, I also subscribed to Amazon because it was now available. So for me it is nice to have an all in one solution for TV, Netflix, and Amazon. In my case the evolution kit makes sense. There is no doubt that the evo makes our tvs better. The pro review on the evo kit confirms what I thought, that picture quality is improved. After the evo things looked brighter to me but I guess it was a slighly sharper picture.
Everything said it probably isnt worth it for you to get the evo. If you decide to bring your tv online and use it for Netflix and some of the numerous other apps, I wouldnt hesitate to get the evo. In the US you guys are getting some very good prices compared to Canada. I paid $234 including taxes and shipping and Im not sorry I bought it at all. I like my toys, if you feel like treating yourself someday, I really dont think the evo is a mistake

Darcman, i am no doubt curious. I will probably get this or the 2nd gen Evo next year. I can see some interesting points, some made by you, ...just need to get past certain cautions i have. Its sorta a "if it aint broke dont fix it" thing because i'm perfectly happy with the tv now. I appreciate your input.

The dual core processor on the es8000 and the quad core with the evolution kit smoke the bd player. I get that you want to protect your tv --it's a lot easier to replace a blu ray player than an led tv. I tried out the latest and greatest blu ray players from samsung before buying and installing the evolution kit and Ireturned the blu ray players because they weren't any better than the built in smart hub and as I hoped the new smart hub with more memory and quad core processing is the best.

Poppagene: May I ask if you tried the Samsung BD-F7500 player?

Thanks

Just upgrade your HD DVD player... should be good to go.

I really want to extend the courtesy to our other members and not follow your hijacking of this thread so i'll be brief and say it once...There are two ways to answer your statement Digimat.

First, the situation is this; Most of the videophiles who know anything about electronics is most likely aware that the Toshiba HD-a30 hdDVD player processes and produces an amazing DVD picture quality. IMHO, second to the OPPO's. I purchased two of these units at a cheap 50 bucks per the weekend after the bluray-hdDVD war was declared over. A steal. I spin a few hddvd's but with over 500 dvd's...i'm totally effing winning. biggrin.gif

Second, you act like your 12, obsessively pestering me (as in the 8000 thread a couple months back) like one of those Florida mosquitoes. Do you live in the exposed brick efficiency with the houseplant and a beanbag chair and a tv, popping zits between posts? Oh, my second Toshiba hdDVDplayer is in my other house in Florida (hence I know my mosquitoes) biggrin.gif

Thats pretty much all the calories i'll burn responding to your limp-wristed lil girl jabs. Now go off to some other...thread and flex your creative posting skills...

To all others, Sorry guys, the OFFICIAL Samsung Smart TV "Evolution Kit" Thread is back on track and tuned to it's regular and appropriate theme.

Just enough to try out the smart hub and the browser. No 4K tv in the near future.

Not to mention how ridiculously cheaply priced HDDVD movies were in the aftermath.

Precisely poppagene; those players came with 3 movies IN the box plus coupons to get other cheap...and most titles were 5 to 8 dollars per for a sweet hi-def movie on a disc...whats not to love about that?

I note that I got an update to the Version of the Evolution Kit firmware (?) or software(?) yesterday. I recall it was for 1004 to 1005 (but may be wrong about the numbers). I don't know what was contained, but the "Standard" video setting came out looking better (IMHO) - after a boost in the cell setting.

I have had a couple of the HD-DVD players obtained at garage sales. One was a really nice player with 14 movies for $20 (!) - The second was a top of the line player for $8 -- What's not to like about that??
Well, costcentral agreed to RMA my EK that was acting up, sent it back in, waiting for a replacement. Hopefully I just had a bad unit.

As a side note, if you guys want to buy off my HD-DVD collection, many still sealed, let me know :P

LOL. You can call me Bro too! BTW I see your point of not wanting it connected all the time, rather more or less as a monitor. I too was all excited about the Smarthub, the camera, gestures. But I really use it mostly as a TV set too. To each his own. I got the Evo mainly out of curiosity and because it was reasonable at $188. Should come tomorrow. We shall see, I just hope it's easy to insert/attach to the TV.

It's funny how you make comments about my place of residence while photos of your man cave look like the something even the 70's would be ashamed of. I know you're over the hill and the only thing you have left that makes you feel better at night is the Samsung TV you over paid dearly for, not to mention the first item your ex-wife wants in her settlement, but please dont' make stabs at me because I'm younger and more informed and not still stuck in the 80's clinging to that last touch down effort you made in the 4th quarter but came up short. That's just sad "bro"...

Here goes, everything was working great upgraded to 1005 then it shut off like it should do but then it started cycling on off on off but the tv wouldn't load. I thought I bricked the tv I'm very pissed, couldn't get the tv to turn on. I unplugged the tv waited still cycling so I pulled the EK off the TV. then I turned on the TV and it worked. I Checked for updates everything is up to date, so I watched a little TV for a while and everything seems good, so then I reinstall the EK went through the whole install again now it's working like it should and now it's all good. All I can think of is it must of had a hickup when updating, I was freaking when the TV wouldn't turn on. One other thing the remote wouldn't work so I pulled the cover off I had to pare it with the TV now it's working great again.

Looks like a LOT of apps will no longer be available if you download the latest kit update 1005.2. Update at your own peril

Now most of us know that we haven't had Angry Birds since first installing the kit, but now there is a new "Deleted App List" dated June 20th under Manuals on the samsung.com support page for the EK
Hopefully someone who has downloaded the 1005.2 update already can confirm if the following apps are no longer available:

Youtube
Skype
Redbox Instant
Camera
Ustream
WWE

And that's just to name a few...
Here's the link:

Wait, so people with the EVO kit can no longer Skype and you never had Angry Birds once you installed the kit?

I don't know about angry birds, but skype is working on my es7500 with the evolution kit installed and updated to the latest firmware 1005.

Thanks. Is the Evo kit set to auto update, or do you have to go find the update page in menus like on the TV? Or does the Evo basically become the TV firmware (because it takes over all the TV chips)? I'm getting mine today and I want to know how to leave it at 1004.

If auto update is off, while you're watching tv a screen will come up asking you to download 1005 now, wait and Auto download the next time it's turned off, or you can decline the update altogether. I attempted to download twice, and it failed both times because of size and length. So I figured I would go to the website and just get it the old fashioned way on a USB, and that was when I confirmed just how large the update is 1GB and discovered the deleted apps page

I know they probably have to relicense things for the kit, but if they have to delete some core apps, people are not going to be happy. The idea was that when you buy the kit you'll have more space to download many more apps but may not exactly be the case now if they keep deleting so many. The missing apps list also says that apps that get deleted differ from model to model, so some may report an app is safe but it may not be on your model. And interestingly enough, they even mention refunds to those who have bought a paid app that is now gone, so if you bought Shrek Kart or Pacman you'll likely have no problem getting Samsung to refund you on those if you bought and installed the kit

Installed the EK yesterday without a hitch, except putting the batteries in the remote, WTF samsung... I thought I was gonna shatter the thing into a million pieces.

My first impressions.

First off I noticed motion is handled much better , previously the normal setting for automotion exhibited motion trailing and blurring now I don't notice any.
Picture I would say is about the same, I do not notice a bit better black levels, also movie seems to look better... not quite as washed out as before. Also Cable TV looks better IMO... this has been noted by others as well which is probably due to new algorithm for mpeg and noise reduction.

Update Guide and recommendation seems to work well, although I can't figure out how bring up the guide with the current channel I'm on it seems to default to 2... new remote is great and having your set top box run through the same system is worth the price of upgrade alone.

WIll report back with more once I use it some more but all in all I'm pretty impressed.

So if autoupdate (firmware) if OFF on my TV, and I update the firmware to latest before installing the Evo kit, then install the Evo kit, the Evo should suggest an update to the latest firmware after it installs right? If so I'll say no. That about it?

This has GOT to be a joke right? Maybe they mean they will get removed and you have to reinstall them?
I'm running Skype, Camera and Youtube without any problems.
I just loaded WWE as well and it works
I can no longer find Angry Birds however.

This is such a BS

Edit; Well that's it, the only thing I really gained form the kit was bit better motion control and Just for Kids mode on Netflix.
Skype wasn't working right with Evo kit - speakers would get switched to TV from receiver when it's launched and not switch back when closed.
This PDF was final straw, I'm returning the kit.

Thanks so much for posting it.

F Samsung, my next TV sent won't be from them.

The kit installs the latest update WHEN you are initializing the install. Dont know if you can decline

Well as I noted before, noone has had Angry Birds since installing the kit, its the first app gone after you install it

I'm not suggesting doing anything rash, but if you still have those other apps and they work for now on 1005.2 - they could still be deleted when/if the licenses for those apps expire. I suggest someone contact Samsung and try to get a straight answer on what exactly is going on - when said apps will be deleted - and if they will be brought back at some point

I can't imagine why they wouldn't include Youtube, all the streamers have that. And if when I install mine it starts to download the latest firmware I think one can abort that download even if it starts without my agreeing to start it. I hope. I'm not a huge fan of downloading all the latest updates. My android phone used to suggest an app update like every 10 minutes is seemed, until I turned that off.

Yes Youtube is a must. You would think it would not even be on that list..yet it is...not sure what to make of it all at this point. I just wanted to warn a few people before they update
post #900 of 1474
I have the kit with the latest update and I have the apps I did previous... your speaker problem might have something to do with running your STB through the smart hub.
