New Camcorders unveiled at CES 2013 - Page 4

I am still convenient with canon camcorders than any other brands. I'm still a little bit confused about CES. Can you post some information about CES? I need a new low light camcorder and i want to try a new brand .

The JVC GC-PX100 has 1080p60 and F1.2 10x zoom so it should be great in low light.

Last year's JVC Everio GZ-GX1 appears to have the same f1.2 lens and 1/2.3" BSI sensor as the as yet unreleased GC-PX100, yet does not perform that well in low light.

1080p60 requires a relatively high shutter speed (eg., at least 1/60, preferably 1/120), which degrades low light performance. For low light, you want to shoot 1080p24 with the lowest shutter speed you can stomach.

My impression from reading many reviews is that the Canon HF G10 is currently the best low light consumer video camera. See for example

For low light situations, a shutter of 120 should never be used. A shutter of 60 for 60p footage is more then fine for low light shooting. I do agree though that being able to shoot in 24p or 30 have does have low light benefits as long as you'd be able to set the shutter to eighter 24 or 30 and be careful with your pans.

Not offering 60p is extremely lame, considering that lower-end models offer it not in one, but two variants: 35 Mbit/s MP4 (hopefully with AVC encoding) and 28 Mbit/s AVCHD Progressive.

Next leap will be something akin to AVC Long-G with 4:2:2 color, 10-bit sampling and 50 Mbit/s rate. Canon has entered the same territory where Sony and Panasonic have been long ago: now its pro camcorders can be pushed out by its consumer models, and Canon does not want that. It wants to preserve XF Codec as the high-end format. Anything that gets 4:2:2 or 10 bits will be pushing XF Codec off the pedestal.

A big reason for shooting 1080p60 is for slow motion. For example to show the 1080p60 as 1080p30 would give you 1/2 speed footage. If you intend to do that, you'll want to shoot with a shutter speed at double the frame rate (the so-called 180 degree shutter), namely 1/120. IIf you use a 1/60 shutter, it won't look as good. Of course that will be horrible for low light so you should only do that when there's plenty of light.

You can do exactly the same with interlaced.

I prefer using low light camcorders since I usually take photos of my family outdoors. I have the Canon VIXIA HF G10. It works really great for any outdoor activity.

In another thread you are offering a brand new TM900 for sale! The basic 1080p60 quality standard has not changed. The TM900 set a benchmark. What is it that you are hoping for? Improvements have been incremental, not significant.

I'll most likely keep the 900. No inquiries and I'm not going to give it away. I would like a better low light cam though.

Anybody know if the US G20 has a Lanc control input? I’m bummed that there isn’t yet an ‘affordable’ big sensor camcorder, but that may never happen.

I’m just not sure I can deal with a HDSLR and all the drawbacks to convenience for my general purpose needs. Obviously, if I’m asking about a Lanc controller then you might see where I’m coming from. I’m not really positioned to be purchasing multiple detachable lenses either for that matter really.

My little Canon HF S20 has a Lanc input and I’ve come to enjoy it with the cheapo controller I use with it. The low light video isn’t too hot though. Probably all for the better than I stick with what I have and don’t dig any deeper hole financially with gear (I’m fairly debt free, but it would tempt me if an attractive option came up).
