Official 2013 Sharp LC-XXLE857 Series Thread

Sharp unveiled their new 2013 flagship lineup at CES today. Looks like there will be a 60, 70 and 80 inch version. Sadly, no local dimming. There was also no mention of the "Moth Eye" anti-glare coating ... frown.gif

"The 60-inch LC-60LE857 will begin shipping in March, and the 70-inch LC-70LE857 and 80-inch LC-80LE857 will follow in April. Pricing is to be announced."

Will these at least be full-array sets?

I'm almost certain they will be edge lit.

The 80 inch LE857 will go for $6499. Sharp's press release with details and pricing for their 2013 line is posted at Engadget.
Thanks for the Engadget reference.

My wife and I are in the market right now for a 70" Sharp TV, but we'd wait a few months for the latest and greatest Sharp 70.

Sharp's announced MSRP for the LC-70LE857 is $3999.99.

Considering the intense competition in the TV market and past announced MSRPs versus street prices, what do you think a realistic street price will be say a month after units arrive at retail stores?

(BTW, one of the more attractive features of this set is the improved audio. Just maybe additional soundbars, etc. won't be required.)

If you want the best 70" Sharp, you should probably grab the 70" Elite while you still can. Due to the fact that it has full array local dimming, it's unlikely that any of the 2013 models will be able to compete with it when it comes to overall picture quality.

For the life of me I can't figure out why would they release so many models of the same size screen tv? Between the 60,70,&80 there must be like 12 different
versions total. To me maybe two versions of each size would be plenty. I would think it's hard to get a quality product out of the manuf. line with all the variations.

I am hoping that the new 80" is at least full array back lit. Can anyone confirm?

Sadly, this doesn't appear to be the case. It isn't mentioned in any of the press releases, and it's certainly something they would be touting if it was there. It kind of seems like a step backwards, but it is my understanding that the Elite was a huge failure for Sharp. Your average consumer just wasn't willing to shell out that kind of cash when they could get an 80" set for the same price or even less. Essentially, Sharp killed the market for the Elite by pricing the 80 inchers so reasonably. Since Sharp is hurting financially, I'm guessing they are looking for ways to maximize profits. Edge lit panels are much cheaper to produce, and I think they are hoping to get a bigger piece of the pie by focusing on affordable sets instead of state-of-the-art.

So how are these different from the LC-70LE847 ? Just 2013 version?

Sharp 2013 80" Inch LC-80LE857, LC-80LE757, LC-80LE650 Details

Has anyone confirmed more details than the Sharp PR Release contains?

Specifically, are any of these new sets Full Array and not merely Edge Lit?

By example, is the 2013 LC-80LE757 a step up from the 2012 LC-80LE844 which I believe is Full Array?

Thanks in advance!
Not sure how accurate this is but according to this review new 80" is edge lit.

Well if the new XXLE857 80 inch sets are edge lit and the 2012 XXLC844 has a Full Array, wouldn't that make the 2012 model superior?

Why would this TV be $3999 when the LC-70LE847 is only $2348 ? Other than the exterior, aren't the specs identical?

I emailed Sharp and got back this non-answer regarding Full Array vs. Edge Lit:

"I'm happy to assist with your question. However we don't have any information on the new models yet. You can check for information on new models as it becomes available at http://www.sharpusa.com/ "

Was anyone at CES and know the answer about Full Array on the 2013 Sharp 80 Inch HDTV's?

I like the thinner aluminum bezel on the new sets. If they have at least as good of a picture as the 2012 models, that change alone is worth waiting for.

Does anyone have any information yet about pricing or when the 80 incher will be available?

For what it is worth, I scanned through the new 2013 model numbers on Sharp USA and Amazon. The only ones that appear to be available are the 6xx models, specifically the LC70LE650U and the LC60LE650U (and its cousin the LC650C6500). Those were listed as February deliveries. The LC60LE755, which was listed as a February delivery as well does not appear to be available anywhere yet.

Assume all of the releases are at the end of the month listed. So end of April for the 80LE857.

From Sharp: "80 inch class - LC-80LE857 (April) MSRP: $6499.99"

How much "better" does anyone expect the 857 to be over the 844 from last year? I'm debating buying the 844 before is goes away at a nice discount. Not sure I want to pay more for the 857 and what I'll get for the money.

Can't tell by the specs alone. You have to see the panel (or at least hear from someone who has) to tell about clouding or banding or shifted pixels. Since the set isn't available yet, it's not possible to say.

FWIW someone (I believe on an AVS forum claimed that the 857 series will all be "twice as bright" as last years models. If true, I do not know what this means. I never thought last years models were dim.Not only that extra brightness could mean it just washes out the picture. Now if it means better whiter whites or somehow developing blacker blacks then I'm all for it.

If true, why they would limit it to only the top of the line series I do not know. Also stated was that only the top (2013 models) would be "price protected" like the 90 inchers are...
Just learned that I should have said 50% brighter picture. It is something Sharp calls :per Bright" technology. They have an intelligent contrast engine (their words) that constantly analyzes the signal and enhances the brightness of bright objects while maintaining the black levels. How this increases brightness by 50% I don't know . We will have to see. Once again only available on the 8 series sets.

Although the specifications pages seem to shed no light on the edge-lit vs full-array question, this looks to be the operations manual for the 857 and its siblings.

In this link, they are saying they can increase bright parts of the screen and maintain black in other parts. I wonder if it has something to do with the LCD instead of some type of local dimming?

In this manual, the new 80le857's thinnest section is actually a good 1 inch thinner than that of the 80le844. This seems to confirm that 80le857 is an Edge-Lit. mad.gif

Now, I can only hope that Sharp finds a way to not mess up the PQ (or am I just totally dreaming?).

I have to admit, the evidence would seem to indicate that the 80 incher is indeed edge lit. If this is the case, I would expect the new set too have much poorer uniformity than the 844.

I just noticed that Abt now has all three sizes available for pre-order on their site. This leads me to believe that they should be hitting stores pretty soon. Interestingly, they also show instant rebates that are good through 3/30. They are giving $700 off the 60 and 70 inch models, and $1,000 off the 80 incher. I'm not exactly sure what the deal is with these rebates. It seems kind of weird to be offering rebates on sets that aren't even out yet. I'm guessing the rebates simply bring the cost down to the normal suggested selling (street) prices.

My local future shop is getting this tv next week. I was thinking of swapping out my 65es8000 for it. Was wondering if anyone has seen one yet. Manager there said he'd sell to me for $3000. Sounds like a pretty good deal. What are the main concerns people were having with the 847?
