To inspect the tv thoroughly before you turn it on. Pay special attention to the screen and look for any hairline cracks, scratches, gouges, etc.
Shine the flashlight across the screen, not directly at the screen. That way, small cracks or other glass problems will be easier to see.

A proper calibration and set up will minimize the dithering, but remember that this is something normal on plasmas.

So it won't really negatively effect black level performance and if I can't notice it from 6-9 feet away I shouldn't really stress too much about it?
That's right. Also you might want to try something other than Standard mode. If I'm not having memory failure, I've read comments from Panasonic owners who avoid Standard mode because they think it's flat and dull. Maybe owner's can correct me if I have it wrong. rolleyes.gif

Yeah I've been in custom mode for everything save for animated programming which I use standard for just because things look a little washed out in custom. I'll be playing around with other settings later but when I'm crunched for time and am being lazy, I just throw on standard.

Hey guys, thanks to this forum and plenty of great reviews I purchased a 60ST60 back on memorial day weekend and got a great deal. Now after more than 2 weeks its finally arriving.

I bought it from BB and for some reason they said I only have 15 days to return, which seems odd. They said its blanket policy on everything in store. Seems fishy to me, but can anyone confirm their BB's do this?

Anyways, since I only have 15 days to check it out, and I only really have time on the weekends. Is there a short checklist to go through to make sure my panel is good?

I know the black line problem, and inspecting the glass with a flashlight. Should I hold off on running slides and check out some regular content out of the box to check for problems?

Apologies for my newness, this is my first large premium TV purchase and the short timeframe makes me nervous.

TL;DR problems to look for on the ST60

Thanks!

Hey guys,
I just got a ST60 today and everything is great except I can see what looks like a penny sized "smear" or "smudge" on the lower right hand side of the screen. It's quite faint and only really visible on greyish scenes. It's not grease or anything as I've tried to clean it. I noticed this same mark on a ST50 I had bought last year that I had returned, it was much more visible on the ST50. It almost looks like someone was handling it from the inside just left a small mark or something,

Has anyone else seen/experienced this? Is this just a common occurrence? Not sure if this is worth returning over.

Thanks

Yes - BBY changed their return policy to 15 days. Yes I would watch regular content during viewing hours and use the slides in between. But that's just me. It's not what Dnice was going for, but most people don't like his settings anyway (too dark, too red). There are plenty of other settings that look better (we will point you there if you want) Since I only had 15 days also, I Followed the procedure I described above and it made me feel much more confident that I was fine keeping the TV. Also don't forget - if you have spent a total of $2500 for the year, your return policy becomes 90 days (premium silver membership - is what it's called). Congrats on the set! Let us know what you think. smile.gif

I did not know about that 90 day policy for $2500 in a year. Does buying stuff from pacific sales in their store count? I just spent 1400 there.

Aye, and by 90 days you mean 60 days, right? wink.gif

Return & Exchange Period

15 days for all eligible products
60 days for eligible products for Reward Zone® program Premier Silver members

P.S. The "darker strip on the right side of the screen" has become much less noticeable since starting the slides (I'm about 50 hours in so far)!

Thanks! I am still trying to decide between the flat mounts and one that extends out and turns. The weight of the tv and leverage when extended kind of scares me with an expensive set. Also, the 4144 is showing for up to 63" tvs. Should I ignore that ?

I plan to install it this evening but it looks pretty simple. One other benefit of the Kanto mount is that the plate which bolts to the wall is about 25 inches wide which should allow for proper centering on the wall regardless of where the studs are (provided they are 16 inches on center). This was another reason I went with this mount over the Monoprice mount.

If you go with Monoprice I would definitely use their chat feature to discuss with them which mount is your best bet (or just call them up) as was previously suggested.

Why would you want to? Just stay away from static images and black bars for 100-200 hours and you'll be fine.
Thanks for the replies guys!

Well that makes me feel a lot better. I for sure spent over 2500$ this year as I also bought a Washer Dryer set. They gave me a Membership card. Haven't registered it yet but I will now if it will give me 60 days, much more breathing room.

I plan on doing a mix of viewing and slides. I was going to do D-nice's settings but if there are prefered alternatives point me to em! smile.gif

So as far as problems with the panel just look for anything noticeable? Going back through 200+ pages is a ton but I have read most of it off and on the past month.

I only know of some owners getting buzzing, blobs of weird color in black areas, and the black line. What else should I look for?

They all said the 2D picture quality was excellent but the 3D performance was another matter. 3D is certainly not the most important factor for in my decision to buy this set but I at least want it to watchable in 3D and not frustrating. Anyone care to give your thoughts on how your ST60 performs with 3D? Thanks.

Maybe I haven't seen sets with better 3D, but from an avid movie fan's perspective I think it works great with the right content. Movies that were shot in 3D look great with the right settings (I prefer medium smoothing and 120 hz). I find the experience more enjoyable than watching 3D in the theatre.

The 2D to 3D conversion looks awful, of course, because 2D to 3D conversion is impossible to do right. As always - content is king. Good stuff in = good stuff out.

Unless 3D is the main reason you are buying a TV, in my humble opinon you should have no problem with this set.

The picture is gorgeous and the price (for 60" and below) is quite frankly a steal.

Sincerely,
A happy 60ST60 owner

Most people??? To each his own.

I think D-Nice's settings are the most accurate for a realistic film experience. I used his setting and did some minor tweaking of my own. Assuming you ran his slides it's a great place to start.

Edit - for dark rooms - i.e. nighttime film viewing. I don't use his setting in the daytime.

Anyone getting a new st60 soon?

If so, can you please post a picture of it boxed, specifically of the four white plastic clips?

Will rep whoever can post this. Thanks.

I just picked up a Harmony 600 remote for $40! Only issue I am having is the buttons seem to be double clicking when I control the ST60 with it. Even when I quickly tap the button it moves 2 spots on the menu. I am not having this issue with any other devices.

Is there a fix for this? Maybe a sensitivity setting or soomething?

You must use the Harmony software. NOT THE WEBSITE.
Im doing this by memory so forgive me if its not perfect.
Go to Devices. Pick the Panny. Choose Troubleshoot. Click TV responds too much or not enough. Change the setting to 1.
That will fix it. smile.gif

You probably need to build in a delay its in the advanced settings in the software. Darn that James Bond lol

I've read similar reports over the past several years for different plasma displays. Keep in mind how many posts I've probably read in that period of time. eek.gif

Not sure if this is worth returning over.
It wouldn't be for me unless there was something else wrong enough to return the set.

Enjoy. smile.gif

I would return it because otherwise it would be the only thing I would look at while watching the TV.

HD2Blu, your advise to ThatDoc is fine, but your comments about D-Nice's settings is gratuitous crap. wink.gif

Due to the variation from sample to sample there is no way that "borrowed" settings from anyone are equivalent to having a display professionally calibrated. Second, D-Nice's settings, if you followed his instructions exactly, will, in D-Nice's words, generally get you to a good starting point for further adjustments.

I have nothing against trying D-Nice's settings without exactly following his instructions, or understanding that they are a starting point, unless the person doing it makes comments like you did. There are people who have posted that D-Nice's settings are too dark and too red, but you have no basis to speak for most people. None of us do. smile.gif
