The S590 has HDMI plus a composite video output and analog stereo audio outputs, plus both coax and optical digital audio outputs.

The UK model of the S5100 has only HDMI plus a coax digital audio output. (I haven't seen the U.S. model's manual.)

Both players have network and USB connections.

In other words, so far as the functionality you claim to want, they're the same, since you need to use HDMI to transport SACD audio digitally.

If you want quality multichannel analog audio outputs, that's another matter entirely. You need to consider spending more than twice as much for a Panasonic DMP-BDT 500 (~$250) or another factor of two for an Oppo (~$500 or $1000).

Didn't someone mention that the S5100 is faster than the S590?

My understanding is that the startup and load times are somewhat faster, yes.

I just got the s3100 from BB and when I push the power button on the player itself it feels soft and spongy compared to the other buttons.

It feels like theres no (CLICK) feeling when pushed compared to the others.

Is this normal or did I get a dud power button?

I saw the new Sony BP at the Best Buy also and I hate to say this but the new machines look and feel like junk. The S590 and S390 are better. I wonder how the Panasonic S230 and S330 will be?

Ever since they stopped using metal cases, looks like they're trying to make the plastic case not look as cheap as it really is. The buttons on the 90 series are pretty poor to begin with. I can't imagine the 100 series being any worse, but apparently it is. Seems like ditching analog would be enough cost cutting without cheaping out on the buttons.

Why does there need to be a "click" with the power button is pressed? I would retaher it not make any noise when I press it.

I just hope the S5100 comes out by this weekend. I want to pick up a TiVo Mini and would like to pick up the S5100 at the same time.

I thought the Sony players also had Vudu? Is this not the case?

VuDu works fine on my Sony S790

Just a side note.

The HDMI port on my s3100 was a CRAZY tight fit.

I had to wiggle the hdmi cable in a circle motion for it to go into place.

It wouldn't go in the port by just pushing it in straight forward.

Looks like sony changed something with the port because I used the same cable with my old s590 and it went in just fine.

For those who owns or seen the S5100 , is it the same size as the miniature S1100 and S3100? I saw those two players at Best Buy this week and they really look real cheap.

How good is the IR reception on the S5100? Can it receive the IR from a wide angle or is it narrow?

I had just checked a couple of hours ago and it still wasn't in stock. I hope BestBuy gets it this weekend. I want to pick one up and try it out. If I really like it I will be getting a second S5100 instead of picking up a second Roku 3. Since the Roku doesn't have access to the 3D content from the streaming apps like the S5100 is supposed to.

It's about as good as you can get, about 15 degrees short of being able to do a full 180 sweep.
I just tested it by opening and closing the the disc tray at 10' away and a very wide angle
...and distance is good enough to reach the farthest corners of my room.

Can anyone summarize the difference between s590 and s 5110? I'm totally confused on choosing the two. I'm looking forward for playability of various formats.
Also, does either of these 2 models support ac3 and DTS audio via USB and DLNA?

No model 5110 that I know of, did you mean S5100 or S1100?
 

I will have a 5100 tomorrow via UPS. I got confirmation on Monday the unit would ship out today.
