How much better is the 790? Or is 5100 comparable in PQ?

The streaming of Netflix, vudu, hulu and amazon is very important - will I see any "improvements" compared to my old 790?

Last, footprints. Is this new 5100 smaller than 790?
(Thus, can I put it on top of my 790, to save space in my stereo rack).

Both owners manuals are online. You can look up the units dimensions.

The 790 has SBM. The 5100 doesn't.

The 790 has the "Pro " ip noise reduction for Hulu and amazon. The 5100 doesn't.

I guess you all have gotten a code to unleash:

Will we able to watch this Sneak on any of the Sony players?

Is there actually a difference between the "pro" IP noise reduction and the regular IP noise reduction the S5100 has?

Looked again in sony.com

- nope, I simply cannot find any measurments of these two players.

This sbm and noise ip - please do explain in plain english for a novice wink.gif

When I look on the Sony store website I see that the S5100 has these dimensions

Dimensions (Approx.) : 11.4 x 1.6 x 7.8 in (290 x 43 x 199mm)

and the S790 has these

Dimensions (Approx.) : 17" x 1.8" x 7.8" (430 x 46 x 199mm)
I posted the dimensions a few pages back
...my S5100 is 14" wide.
And looks just fine sitting on top my 17" Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player.

....BTW happy St.Patty's day!

Soo -

A 5100 would go nicely on top of the 790 then?

Have asked some friends about pq in 599 -- quote:
"you will se better picture on 790, and a even better on Oppo 93"

Really, do you really see the dif on a 51 samsung tv 2011 serie 6 plasma??

Ip content nr pro offers a number of additional settings. Is if better .... Dunno. I just leave it on default (film2) and seems to work fine.

I've compared crackle on the s790 and the new roku3. The 790 blew roku3 out the water interns of picture quality. The roku3 looked dull and soft

SBM for video attempts to reduce "banding" visble on poorly authored disks and plenty of ip streaming content

SBM is Super Bit Mapping for Video (SBM-V) technology. Advanced digital error diffusion breaks up the solid bands of color, effectively smoothing out the gradation. The result is nearly the equivalent of 14-bit gradation in an 8-bit output signal. The television delivers amazingly graceful reproduction of faces, sunsets and other areas of subtle color gradation.

SACD

I have a large collection of Sa CD.

That means I cannot buy any Panasonic - they wont play them ??

So my choices will be - Sony - is there really any other choice?
ive both the 790 and 5100 and the 5100 is definitely smaller than the 790. the remote on the 5100 is smaller. stubby little sucker... wink.gif

due to the diamond shape of the top cover on the 5100, you cant put anything on top of it.

No, not in this price range.

1) disk loading times will be improved by at least 10s
2) wifi reception will be better (not confirmed yet)
3) new youtube interface with support for mobile devices and HD video
4) full support for Sonys new 2nd screen app.

There will be no audio improvements.

Thanks apw, this is exactly the info I was looking for.

I'm hoping the 5100 will be quieter too, although the 590 is not a loud machine by any stretch.

I'm also hoping the 5100 doesn't take a step backward in terms of file and disc playback support.

Wonderful!

So, my two machijne setup will then be -- the 790 on deck to play my SACD and European blurays
and a 5100 on top to stream Netflix, Vudu and Amazon video - and my USA region A Blurays

So - pt 2 will mean 5100 is better on strreaming services such as Vudu (than 790) ?
pt 1 - I feel 790 is fast, is 5100 even faster?

pt 3 - new youtube, the 790 interface is sluggish to use, I agree

pt 4 -- that one I dont have info on, I need to consult the manual

Then, all I need is a nifty macro on my Roomie remote app - that fires up the Netflix service on my new 5100 with just one-click :-)

(and of course the power - how do I run this 12W /110 V machine on the Norwegian 220v. I guess the 5100 isnt possible to modify, I have to buy a converter?)

So much for the dimensions at the Sony USA store. I wonder why they don't have the proper specs listed?
I don't know what the 590 could play, but the 5100 played 6 different video formats I tried last night without a hiccup. Only one of which would play on my PS3. It played an MTS file, MPEG 4, HD MVI files directly copied from my Canon camera. 720p mkv file. And M2TS file. Which is the only one that would play on the PS3 as it had been through TSMuxer. This plus it playing DD HD lossless tracks on 3D movies makes it well worth having along with a PS3.

No, not in this price range.

There are, of course, the various "universal" disc players from various manufacturers, like Oppo, at much higher prices.

Please forgive me, I should really like to get your opinions on the following oppo - sony matters.

1. The remote. On Sony 790, you can point anywhere, My 790 is behind me and my recliner, I point the remote at the tv - works perfect (approx 180 deg)
Oppo. You have to point directly at it, no angle. I guess the same **** on the new 103 ?

2. Voltage. The oppo is worldwide psu - 110 - 220v. The sony 790 is region specific, you cant fix or switch a usa 110v to operate here in Europe at 240 v? That also applies to 5100. I have to use a power converter I guess?

3. Does oppo 93 runs netflix at full hd 1080 / 5.1 ? On my 790 it is, i also assume 5100 is?

4. This 4k rumours by netflix, I assume 790 will run this when released next year. Is this 4k something that disfavours 5100 ?

Off Topic (?)

Amazon.com

Found this;

Simran SMF-200 Deluxe 200 Watts Step Down Voltage Converter for International Travel to AC 220V/240V Countries

Could this cheap unit at 15 usd unit be used for permanent psu of my sony 5110 rated 9 watt ??

There is no difference in file support between x100 and x90 players (with DLNA).

Yes. When I tested the 3100, it was 10s faster at loading both a regular BD disk and a BDLive disk, over the S790.

The x90 and x100 play the same files. See this post for supported formats:

No. Oppo 93 is only capable of Netflix at 720p streams and no Dolby Digital + support

x100 and all x90 players are capable of Netflix 1080p including new higher tier Super HD stream (5800kb/s - subject to your ISP supporting), and Dolby Digital +

Didn't someone mention that the S5100 also has access to the Netflix 3D streams? This is one of the reasons I decided on this BD player. I'm just waiting for it to appear at BestBuy.
Been using a ATV3 for Netflix. The s5100 seems to have a better picture and sound. And my onkyo 808 is showing Dolby digital +

Well, I got antsy for a new player and couldn't wait for the 5100. So I bought a s790 today. First dvd I tried, the picture cut out for a few seconds. My s570 did this on certain dvds as well, so I wasn't worried. I changed the dvd 24p to on and watched a blu ray and streamed a movie. Tried the same dvd again and is skipped like crazy. Tried another, did the same thing. Factory reset did nothing. I had to unplug the power and hdmi and plug them back in to solve the problem. Anyone else seen these issues? Could it have been an hdmi issue after I changed the settings? I may have to return it and get the 5100 after all.

Turn deep color off.

There are two 24p settings. One for BD And one for DVD. I wouldn't recommend using DVD 24p. I find it causes more trouble than good with odd skipping/missed frames.
Now this is strange. The disc that started this is from the Three Stooges set, and I've seen it with a few other sony discs I can't recall at the moment. But the first episode on eash disc would go to black for 2 seconds on my old S570 every time I watched them. I tried a S590 with the same discs and they didn't do it. The s790 did it the first time as well. But after unplugging the power and hdmi when it stuttered non stop on the second playthrough, now the disc starts without the black pause. Tried the 570, it still does it. Maybe it is a firmware issue. When it was stuttering, I also noticeed that the sony intro and warning screens were fine and it only skipped when the show started. I also tried Jaws 2, and that one the warning screens were fine and it started to skip when it reached the animated menu. Definately seems like an hdmi output issue. I had turned on the dvd 24p and changed the output to 1080p instead of auto, to get in back to normal I still needed to unplug it after changing everything back. Not sure if I should keep the new s790 or if I'm needlessly worrying

Just got the Sony BDP-S5100. The grand kids were here the week and we needed a new DVD player and the PAN BDP230 I wanted wasn't around yet. So today I tried browsing the internet and I find that the remote doesn't have a keyboard, you must use the direction keys to use the on screen keyboard and it's sooo slooow. Does the BDP230 have a good remote? Is there another solution anyone knows of?
On the Sony I typed in GOOGLE, the page opened but I can't type into it and there is no on screen keyboard. I plugged in an old Apple keyboard and wireless mouse but only the mouse works and I got the curser blinking. Tried a Microsoft keyboard too, no go either. Is the BDP230 better because if it shows up at BestBuy before the 30 days I'll switch as I wanted the Skype anyway.
