Does the BDP230 have a good remote? Is there another solution anyone knows of?
On the Sony I typed in GOOGLE, the page opened but I can't type into it and there is no on screen keyboard. I plugged in an old Apple keyboard and wireless mouse but only the mouse works and I got the curser blinking. Tried a Microsoft keyboard too, no go either. Is the BDP230 better because if it shows up at BestBuy before the 30 days I'll switch as I wanted the Skype anyway.
Panny remote is functionally the same as the sony.

My Logitech K400 works fine (both keyboard and mouse) with the sony player. Sideview app works fine too. But in all honesty, the sony browser sucks so bad that there's really no point in trying to use it at all. I wouldn't expect Panny's new browser to be much better. These player's simply don't have the memory or CPU power for a decent browser experience.

+1 mdavej is right. All these players are using the opera browser for embedded devices. They are so constrained by resources, they take forever and a day to render the page. Its just not worth the time or trouble. You're better off just using a tablet or phone.

Heres the dilema, I want to stream ripped dvds and movie files from htpc. Currently have a ps3 slim, works great.
I dont know weaather to buy another used ps3 backwards comptatible or go for the new Sony s3100.
The older ps3 can go in another room, I would like someone to give me advantage/disadvantages to either.
I am not a gamer, wife is:)
Thanks for any input.

Thanks for the info about the browser. It's sad that it's been so many years and there is no decent browser built in to any of these units. With the SoC's so cheap now, maybe an Android based BluRay player will
come out soon. Anyway the wife likes the Sony, she watched Sanford and Son on one of the free services so it is wife approved. I'll keep my old Win XP box connected for browsing and try out my new Android Mini PC RK3066 running JellyBean for the games.

The youtube app has been reworked so that you can watch videos in HD! Not sure what kind of sound quality is available, but even 720 would be a big step up from what's currently available...

I've been checking a couple of local BestBuys over the last two weeks. No S5100s yet and every time I go there they have more and more of last years S590 in stock. Last night when I was there they had at least twenty boxes on the shelf. I wonder if they will try to sell out of the S590 before they start selling the S5100? I might end up getting an S590, since they are so cheap right now, if it will do 3D from Netflix.

I checked with Best Buy and was told they would be in stock on the 24th. So this weekend, if you are wondering. I tried the bdp-s790 and got a defective unit. I also wasn't blown away enough with it to justify the $250 price tag. So I went for the bdp-s590 instead. Early feed back on the 1100 and 3100 seems underwhelming and I don't like the shape of the new units this year. Super HD and 3D Netflix depends mostly on your internet provider. And since I have Xfinity and I can't get these options and use a wired network, the only thing about the 5100 that appeals to me is the faster start up times. So an acclaimed 590 for $95 seemed like a no brainer. Also worth noting for those who are really anxious for the 5100. Target is starting to show them in stock in their stores. If you look it up online, it is the 5100 that they list. I haven't checked to see if they are linked to the 590. They are also priced higher at $149.99.

It means that this particular disc was mastered for the European market. Their PAL TV refresh rate is 50 fps and not 60 fps as is used in the U.S. As a result, U.S. Sony BDPs will report "unknown disc" when you try to play it. I suspect that it really is restricted to Blu-ray region B, too.

I was at a Target in Columbus, Ohio tonight, they had (1) 5100 in stock. I will probably go back tomorrow and pick it up if it is still there. Hopefully I will have better luck with it than I had with the S790. Audio delay issues. I switched to an LG, issue went away. The S790 has an audio delay feature, but that would only make my problem worse. I needed audio ADVANCE. Fingers crossed the S5100 doesn't have the same delay issue.

Got my 5100 today. Netflix is the best I have ever seen, probably the most complete package (DD+,1080P) and very stable. Web browser is a joke, most videos don't open and it's very slow. Everything else is pretty much the same old.

Yes, according to a review on amazon. I'm not sure if this feature is available or not on the other models.

I picked up the S5100 this evening. It's actually not as bad as the cases of the S3100 and S1100 I had previously seen. It seems a little more sturdy than those. It seems fairly quick with BD playback. If the S590 actually takes ten seconds longer then that player is really slow. I was surprised with the Amazon and Hulu+ apps. They seem rather outdated compared to what is available on other devices. Hopefully they get updated. I see the S5100 does have access to the Netflix 3D streams as someone also mentioned earlier. And with the VUDU 3D it will output in 1080P unlike the PS3 which is limited to 3D in 720P from the apps. The BD drive was louder than I would have expected. But it could be more noticeable because I have the player at a temporary location which is on a high surface and it's also not a hard surface. Although when viewing a BD you can't hear it over the soundtrack.
And I guess like every electronic device out there, there are things I like about it and things I don't like.

The 1100 is available at costco for $70. It's billed as the 110 and comes with a free hdmi cable. Entry level, wired, non 3D setup.

I'll wait for the 5100 (or 510).

I can't decide between s590 and s5100. What are some major differences? Currently the s590 is approx $100 and s5100 is $140. Does the new s5100 justify the extra cost?

I can't remember the post number but its in this thread ..

Think we said basically

The 5100 is

1) faster at disk loading (at least 10s)
2) improved wifi
3) semi metal case
4) hd youtube app
5) full compatibility with tv sideview
6) ability to boot into SEN
7) play music whilst viewing photos
8) improved web browser that supports some html5 video

.... Over the 590

The 590 offers over the 5100 :

1) analog audio and video outputs
2) optical digital audio output

It's just a temporary spot. I need to move my PS3 to opposite side of the room to make room for the S5100 since I can't really place much, if anything, on top of the S5100. My Roku 3 would fit on top of it as well as my PCH A400, but since it's not level on the top I don't plan on putting anything there.

The S5100 also has access to the Netflix 3D streams. No one never mentioned that the S590 had access to them.

I also tried the Youtube app on my S5100 the other night. It worked very well. I just logged in and had access to all my subscriptions. I spent an hour playing back stuff. I think this will be the device I got to when I view Youtube content.

Although I did have an issue trying to play back some SACDs. It wouldn't send out any audio. My receiver showed it was receiving DSD and multi-channels, but a message would pop up saying that it will not send audio out over HDMI. The only thing I can figure is that this message pops up because my DVDO DUO is taking the HDMI input and sending audio only out from one HDMI output and sending video only to the TV with another HDMI output. I'll need to try it with a direct connection to my Denon 3808 to see if it will send the audio through then. If it doesn't work I'll just need to go back to my old OPPO SACD player.

The 5100 seems to have a superior feature set.

Is it any quieter than the 590?
I would like to hook a large external hard drive to the back USB port and store my backed up DVD files on to it so I can pull them up on the 5100. Could someone please answer a few questions?

1. What is the best format to use to retain the best video/audio quality?
2. What program do I use?
3. Can this be done with Blu Rays as well? 3D Blu Ray?

I got the 5100 on Saturday from Amazon. So far, so good. Load times are fine and I like the Amazon app on this machine vs what I remember seeing on the PS3. All the title/menu choices (Prime, Buy/Rent, Watchlist) options are on 1 screen and as smaller icons. And after it loads a title, when you hit display, it shows you the mbps your connection currently is while streaming your specific title. I think I was locked in at 21.6 mbps with whatever title I was streaming on Saturday. Obviously more than enough for their HD playback. The user interface moves much faster vs some of the older units. And I actually like the design of the unit. It's smaller than I was anticipating too.

Received mine Friday from Amazon. Setup was easy. Unit is very small. Not even big enough to hide its own wires. Have it setup on wifi and have to say if this is super wifi, I am glad I didn't get the 590. Fyi i have fios and if I remember its a 30/30 plan and use their wifi router. I only get 2 bars and a good rating even though the router is only 1 floor and 12 feet away. DVDs upscale very well compared to my 9 year old Sony that just broke. I did make some backups to check hard drive and dlna. I backed up into mkv and mp4. They were both the same size files. Over dlna using serviio on a decent box running Win 7. I can not fast forward mkv files. Also the compressed version 800mb in mkv streamed fine while the uncompressed 4gb file had to buffer a lot. Put same files on a hard drive and can fast forward. The side view app worked great on my Evo 3d. Also synced my phone and 5100 in the YouTube app. That worked great as well. Hit play on phone and watch it on TV. I have most used bluray, Netflix, or Amazon yet. I do plan on using Netflix or amazon soon just not sure which one I want. This is my first bluray player and plan on mostly streaming and using hard drive. Any tips are welcome.
