I found the
manual for the 3100 but none of the others yet. In there, the interface for the 100 series looks exactly the same as the 90 series.
It's the same mdavej. Verified on the s3100. Same old XMB.
My observations are.
The s3100 gets a semi metal shell over plastic on the x90 series. You could argue build quality has improved .... But only marginally. The 3100 is a nice looking player though.
YouTube fans rejoice. The 3100 get a new lean back youtube interface. It's very nice indeed and supports hd YouTube video.
Finally ... The onscreen keyboard is qwerty style. Not the weird numeric keypad style.
Want to listen to music whilst viewing picture over DLNA? Now you can.
You can now boot directly into the SEN portal. The SEN portal has had a small revision but its the same old 8 favorites allowed as before.
I tested the 790 BD load v the 3100, with a BD LIVE disk and a regular BD disk. The 3100 beat the 790 by about 10 seconds.
The VUDU client bumps to version 3.1. This actually means very little other than at start up says it supports dolby digital 7.1 ... But the x90 supports this anyway.
Other than that .... The 3100 really is the same as the 390.
I did notice that when navigating a pretty large DLNA library the 3100 didn't seem as snappy as the 790 .... But it's not very noticeable and probably means very little.
If you want SACD support. The 3100 is not for you. No support offered.
Finally got a chance to play with the tv sideview app for iOS. Big disappointment really. It doesn't do much. The search sort of works but doesn't search your home network media and the netflix search didn't seem to work. The onscreen keyboard still doesn't work with netflix or Vudu either ! The tv sideview apps support is pretty useless. It just provides a ability to start the app ... Not much more. Note you can no longer use mediaremote app on the 100 players.
I think the built in web browser has being improved. I did get a YouTube video playing back on youtube.com but haven't managed to repeat this ! It's not supporting flash but may be html5.
Is it worth upgrading over the x90 ? I think if you are a serious youtube user then maybe .... Otherwise save your hard earned.
