Official Sony BDP-S1100, BDP-S3100 and BDP-S5100 - Page 2

Just got the S3100 today. Netflix Super-HD works beautifully over the Wi-Fi. It can take a while to set it up the first time as you need to update the firmware, enter the Wi-Fi password via the remote, and "authorize" the player on-line to work properly with certain services such as Netflix. So keep a device with a Web browser handy for the initial set-up.

I've yet to play a Blu-Ray disc in it. tongue.gif

The specs say "XMB" ...... so I would say so. Not sure about specific apps like Hulu or Amazon VOD. They could do with a facelift really.

Does anyone know how the BDP-S3100 player performs with Amazon Instant? Any difference from last years models?

Won't know until someone buys one and reports back :-)

Any hints as to when the 5100 will be avail on Amazon in the US?
All the info I've seen so far on the 5100 implies that it only has one HDMI out? Is this accurate? The S790 had two so I was hoping this years flagship would as well.

Again, the S5100 is a replacement for the S590, and will have 1 HDMI output. Note, there are no more analog outputs on this player (both audio and video).

The S790 continues into 2013, and remains the flagship player.

Thanks! Kind of too bad, though. I was expecting a price drop on the S790. ;-)

Question for anyone owning the S3100 or S5100 (or actually for the 590 & 790, too):
The Sony manual for all of these units shows one mode of operation for DLNA where you "control" the streaming from your smart phone, with output going to the player. Has anyone tested this from an Android phone (mine is the Samsung Galaxy S2), specifically, running an app like BubbleUPnP or iMediaShare, and selecting the Sony (S3100, S5100, 590, or 790) as the Renderer (output device), and playing music or photos from a Library (local on the phone or on a PC on your network running DLNA server app)? My current Panasonic DMP-BDT310 has DLNA and has a "Renderer" pick in the menus, but my phone does NOT see it as a Renderer device to stream to. So I can only stream music, etc. by controlling it from the BluRay using the BluRay remote, not the phone. The readibility, size of menus and speed of controlling it from the phone would be MUCH better than controlling the streaming from the BluRay remote & menus.[/SIZE]

Yes, it can work a few ways actually ....

You can use your phone as a simple controller. Sony offer "Audio remote" on IOS that allows you to select music from your DLNA server (say on your PC), and play the music using your Sony BDP. It will work with other DLNA renderers too. The new Sony TV SideView app for iOS and Android does exactly the same but does it for photos and video too. It works most of the time but I think theres a few bugs in the app.

The other use case is where the phone acts as its own DLNA sever and the app also provides remote playback too (imediashare). So you could pick something and send it to the Sony BDP. I've used Imediashare for Ios ..and it appeared to work ok, but there were a few occasions when I sent a video using the phone to the Sony BDP and it didn't do anything ! Fortunately, you can also navigate the imediashare content directly on the Sony BDP though.

Its DLNA ... so expect the unexpected !!

One final use case, unrelated to DLNA, but sony offer one final iOS (and I assume android) app called Mediaremote. This one also provides a way of search and selecting on-line video and music content (e.g crackle, Flixster, etc) ... using the app and "sending it" to the Sony BDP. I think that feature has also being rolled into TV Sideview, but that feature doesn't work with the older 2012 players. Suppose to work with the 2013 players too.

Lots of usecases !

Thanks for the quick reply, apw2607! Sounds good. I guess if anyone else has used the iMediashare (or other Media Server App) on a Samsung Android phone, that would clinch it. Just checking that it would work for other-than iPhones...

I've got a S3100 arriving tomorrow, so will be able to answer many of these questions and queries in more detail ... and hopefully be able to answer the question ... is it worth upgrading from a 2012 player smile.gif

@apw,

thanks for your info and responses!

Ive a 790 (and a first gen ps3) but i thought the 5100 would be the replacement of the 790. i see it is not.

so, if you wanted to add a blu ray player to another room, would you recommend the 790 or the 5100? is the 5100 a step BACK in your opinion over the 790? I dont care about dual HDMI so exclude that from the equation....
Remember that it's nominally a replacement for the S590. The S790 continues to be their best player. It's even a step back from the S590 in that there's no analog audio or video output of any kind, only S/PDIF and HDMI according to the info on the U.K. Sony site.

If you watch many marginal DVDs, the S790 also has a variety of upscaling and anti-noise options not available on the S590 or listed for the S5100.

Just ordered S5100 with points from my credit card rewards program. Gotta love FREE smile.gif Can hardly wait to get it, and hopefully start taking advantage of Netflix Super-HD for starters. Will be replacing a Samsung 3D player which works fine, but is a few model years older - will move this to the upstairs great room to be able to stream Netflix programs for the kiddies.

I replaced my Sony S550 (which just after the warranty) stopped completely playing Blu Ray discs, prior to that I had been having intermitted problems, the replacement was the Sony S790, multi-format player. After 6 months it has yet to skip a beat on any format, 3-D Blu Ray, Blu Ray, DVD, VCD, Photos, Music on DVD Media-single layer, dual layer, BD... The 3-D playback is purely outstanding. For BD Live I use a 4GB flash drive to download extra content.

Just so pleased I am happy the S550 did not interfere with my decisions to stay with Sony, nor did I jump into the purchase, by researching the type of player I wanted. Many didn't have Internet Browsers or other features (it could use a Qwerty keyboard rather the letter character boxes to move through) however that was easily solved when I took my TV remote, which did have the qwerty keyboard and coded it for the Sony player. Could have better Wi-Fi antennae(s), which was overcome by connecting it to my Linksys Wireless-AC Universal Media Connector-WUMC710 (and saved $50.00 on the purchase) and works well with the Linksys EA-6500AC Router. Router is ready for next standard and fully compatible with all other 802.xx.

Also compatible with Active or Passive 3-D.

I wonder how is the remote for the new players. Pictures at Amazon did not show the remote. The remote for the S590 was a downgrade from S570. I hope this one is at least like the S570 not S590.

Edit: From S3100's manual, it looks the same one as the S590. Too bad, was hoping S570 remote.

LuckyCheetah,

Exactly which model are you commenting on, the 5100? If so, are any of the video or music apps different than your 790? Any difference in power up and load speed?

Also, can you give more details on that remote with QWERTY (brand, model), and if it's a harmony, exactly what profile did you use? Is it working through bravia sync or does each letter send a different IR signal directly to the player. Or are you talking about a wireless keyboard plugged into USB? My goal is to find the sony IR codes for the full QWERTY keyboard.

Thanks

According to the Canadian specs, the remote for the S5100 is the exact same model used by the S590 (RMT-B119A).

I found the manual for the 3100 but none of the others yet. In there, the interface for the 100 series looks exactly the same as the 90 series.

Can anyone test if the Cinavia detection is now implemented on DLNA streaming? S590 got a lucky break that Cinavia detection only works on physical disc, not streaming content. Wonder if Sony closed this 'loophole'.
I picked up the S5100 today, and was upgrading from the S590. The S5100 is about 2 inches narrower, a little taller, and has the same approximate depth. As previously mentioned, the remote is exactly the same. The interface is exactly the same, though it's possible some configuration menu options have changed. I didn't notice any differences in video quality. All in all, it's a virtual twin, so I'll just mention the differences I noticed.

1. Speed. It feels noticeably faster than the S590. Pretty subjective, and I didn't put them side by side, but I'd estimate about twice as quick.
2. Netflix. Still no 3D support but when using the wired connection, streams got to quality much faster. In one instance, the stream started at X-High HD. Without bandwidth contention, the stream stuck at X-High HD, where I found my S590 had a tendency to fall-back randomly.
3. Sideview. Meh. It will display a TV guide for whatever service you are using, and I presume if using a Sony TV or Google TV, it will change the channel for you. (I have neither). The remote features for the S5100 initially looked good, but upon entering an app (eg: Netflix) and clicking Start on Sideview, there were no context specific features. It didn't display a movie selection in Netflix, it didn't show me content in AOL HD, etc.

Overall, a bit disappointing. I'm not sure it warrants anyone upgrading from the S590 unless they are very annoyed by speed of apps or depend on the device for Netflix. Based on what I've read about the S790 (Sony is too stupid to sell it in Canada), the S5100 would be a downgrade in both connections and features. I'm not going to return it, but I continue to be interested in whether the other manufacturers made more significant advances in their players this year.

If anyone has questions about it, I'll do my best to answer them. I saw the Cinavia question, but I don't have any content handy to test that out.

It's the same mdavej. Verified on the s3100. Same old XMB.

My observations are.

The s3100 gets a semi metal shell over plastic on the x90 series. You could argue build quality has improved .... But only marginally. The 3100 is a nice looking player though.

YouTube fans rejoice. The 3100 get a new lean back youtube interface. It's very nice indeed and supports hd YouTube video.

Finally ... The onscreen keyboard is qwerty style. Not the weird numeric keypad style.

Want to listen to music whilst viewing picture over DLNA? Now you can.

You can now boot directly into the SEN portal. The SEN portal has had a small revision but its the same old 8 favorites allowed as before.

I tested the 790 BD load v the 3100, with a BD LIVE disk and a regular BD disk. The 3100 beat the 790 by about 10 seconds.

The VUDU client bumps to version 3.1. This actually means very little other than at start up says it supports dolby digital 7.1 ... But the x90 supports this anyway.

Other than that .... The 3100 really is the same as the 390.

I did notice that when navigating a pretty large DLNA library the 3100 didn't seem as snappy as the 790 .... But it's not very noticeable and probably means very little.

If you want SACD support. The 3100 is not for you. No support offered.

Finally got a chance to play with the tv sideview app for iOS. Big disappointment really. It doesn't do much. The search sort of works but doesn't search your home network media and the netflix search didn't seem to work. The onscreen keyboard still doesn't work with netflix or Vudu either ! The tv sideview apps support is pretty useless. It just provides a ability to start the app ... Not much more. Note you can no longer use mediaremote app on the 100 players.

I think the built in web browser has being improved. I did get a YouTube video playing back on youtube.com but haven't managed to repeat this ! It's not supporting flash but may be html5.

Is it worth upgrading over the x90 ? I think if you are a serious youtube user then maybe .... Otherwise save your hard earned.

I'll test cinavia in a bit. Btw DLNA support is identical to the x90 series.
good reviews chaps.

someone mentioned the 5100 lacks certain audio outputs.. well i exclusively use HDMI and just ONE HDMI port, so the lack of analog outputs, the extra HDMI port is not an issue. and hey if sony can save .0002 cents biggrin.gif leaving those out, cool!

apw gave a nice review on the 3100 which sounds like an updated player (as opposed to an upGRADE) and seems worth the cost.

in the end, the 5100 sounds like a good player worth purchasing to me... smile.gif

thanks gents...
